American Citizens for Taiwan (ACT) is a U.S. nonprofit organization composed of United States citizens who support freedom and democracy both at home and abroad. ACT works to spur the U.S. Government to be fully supportive of Taiwan’s right to self-determination, recognizing Taiwan’s democracy as important to U.S. security and economy. The organization monitors U.S. government and Congressional actions regarding Taiwan, keeps the public informed via email, website, and social media, and provides online tools for constituents to contact their members of Congress. ACT advocates for strong U.S.-Taiwan relations and works to counter efforts that would weaken the freedoms and security of both nations.

Role in the Community

  • 2012 — Founding record in the community press: Ho Chie’s interview-feature introduces ACT as a new advocacy organization created by Brock and Julie Freeman in Seattle, launched from a University of Washington cafe conversation as an online social-media tool to mobilize the broader American community in support of Taiwan’s democracy (Heart and Soul: Introducing ACT, 2012-07-09).
  • 2013-02-06 — ACT amplified the Taiwan Policy Act 2013 introduction for the Taiwanese American constituency (ACT: Taiwan Policy Act 2013 Introduced).
  • 2015 — TaiwaneseAmerican.org’s top-10 Facebook posts of 2015 credited ACT (“h/t American Citizens for Taiwan”) for the Taiwanese-food mapping post of 2015-07-23 (top-10 FB posts 2015).
  • 2014 Sunflower movement coverage — TaiwaneseAmerican.org’s curated resource list carried ACT’s “policy-oriented updates” and its “Sunflower Roots” piece among the movement’s English-language sources (Sunflower student movement).
  • Karen Lin, ACT Engagement Director and former executive director of the Taiwanese American Foundation, spoke on an SF 228-events discussion panel (SF 228 panel).
  • Chieni McCullough signed the Pew-era Taiwanese American community statement listed as “Chieni McCullough, American Citizens for Taiwan” (Pew-era community statement).
  • Directory record held in the corpus: ACT 西雅圖美台會 (TAH directory, 2018-06-26).
  • Disambiguation — a different organization, American Citizens of Taiwan Origin (ACTO) 美台公民協會, appears in the TAH corpus and must not be conflated with ACT 西雅圖美台會: see ACTO 美台公民協會 (2015-08-05) and its scholarship record ACTO Realco Second Spring Scholarship Award.
