  • Geography: Taiwanese American community

Brooklyn Artists Studio (BAS) is a nonprofit residential and activity space in Brooklyn, New York that provides free short-term housing to Taiwanese artists visiting New York City. Originally named the Taiwanese Artists Center when it began operations in 2003, it was renamed BAS in the summer of 2007 at the suggestion of director Huang Ming-chuan. The facility is a two-story townhouse with a backyard built in 1919, with physical infrastructure provided by the couple Huang Tsai-tian and Yang Shu-ching. Financial support is provided annually by the Oasis Foundation (founded 2009) and the Cheng Yin-cheng Memorial Fund (founded 2012). The space operates on a DIY, self-sufficient model to give visiting artists maximum freedom.

Role in the Community

BAS is documented twice in the TAH story corpus: a record on its predecessor, the Taiwanese Artists Center, published 2014-10-12 (Taiwanese Artists Center record, 2014), and a record on BAS itself published 2017-08-21 (Brooklyn Artists Studio record, 2017). Both corpus records are bibliographic (band B) — full text stays in the source; the rename chronology in the profile above (Taiwanese Artists Center 2003 → BAS summer 2007) is consistent with both records and no date conflicts arise. Re-grepped 2026-09-20: the only other corpus hit (“Huang Ming” in a 2024 taiwanjustice KMT-leadership article) is a false positive — 黃明慧 Huang Ming-hui, KMT acting chairperson, unrelated to director 黃明錫. No further absorbable memoir material; no name/date conflicts found. Re-grepped 2026-09-21 (slice 09201500-20) and 2026-09-22 (slice 09211500-23): same two band-B records only; verified saturated. Re-grepped 2026-09-23 (slice 09221000-26) and 2026-09-24 (slice 09230900-19): hit set unchanged (the two own-record works pages + index). Verified saturated. SKIP.
