The Columbus Taiwanese Association of America (TAACOLS), also known in Chinese as 哥倫布台灣同鄉會, is a local chapter of the Taiwanese Association of America (TAA, 全美台灣同鄉會), the national umbrella organization for Taiwanese American community associations in the United States. The chapter serves the Taiwanese American community in Columbus, Ohio, and is classified under the TAA’s Midwest Western (美中西) regional grouping alongside other Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and neighboring state chapters.
Role in the Community
- 1972-11-12 — the chapter’s own newsletter is the source for a reminiscence of its early youth activities (354. What did you do when you were young (年輕時做的活動), Newsletters of TAA/Columbus Chapter, 12/11/1972) — evidence the Columbus chapter was active in the movement by the early 1970s. The same reminiscence records the chapter’s finances at the time: “The poor Formosan Club only had $130.56 in 1972. The membership fee is $1.00.” — a snapshot of the chapter’s grass-roots scale in its early years; the newsletter also ran records into 1974 (Newsletters of TAA/Columbus Chapter, 12/1974), consistent with the uninterrupted-run claim below.
- The chapter published 《鄉訊》(Formosan Newsletter); it is referenced in 吳木盛’s TAA memoir (2014). A related directory record exists for the “Formosan Club of Columbus” 俄亥奧州哥倫巴斯城台灣鄉會 newsletter (Formosan Newsletter 鄉訊). HOLD: conflict — “Formosan Club of Columbus” vs “TAACOLS/哥倫布台灣同鄉會” naming treated as related-but-unmerged pending verification.
- The corpus holds a dedicated record crediting the chapter’s newsletter as the longest continuously issued publication of any Taiwanese American organization: “149. Newsletter of TAA/Columbus Chapter / The Longest one and without interruption of Newsletter, issued by Taiwanese American organizations from 1972-2016” — a 44-year uninterrupted run, corroborating the chapter’s continuous activity since the early 1970s ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ff149|TAH #149, 2016-02-08]]).
- Chapter participation in the U.N. International Festival in Columbus is documented in the corpus ( TAA-Columbus, OH); 吳木盛’s memoir recounts encountering fellow movement leaders via the Columbus chapter’s presence at that festival (2017).
- Directory records: the TAA chapter itself ( TAA 全美台灣同鄉會哥倫布分會), the sibling FAPA chapter ( FAPA 台灣人公共事務會俄亥俄州哥倫布分會), and the local church anchor (Taiwanese Christian Church in Columbus 哥城台語基督教會).
