Role in the Community
-
The movement-era predecessor at Cornell is documented in community memoir 310. 伊薩卡臺灣同鄉會的簡介 (Mei-Hsi Chen). The Cornell Taiwanese student gathering began in the mid-1960s (Joseph H. Chen arrived for his Ph.D. in 1965; earlier figures included Dr. Chao-hsiung Yeh and Taiwanese Ph.D. students Shu-ho Wang and Yang-yang Wu), centered on Taiwanese cuisine, mutual aid, and welcoming new students.
-
Per the same memoir: after Mainland China opened up and Chinese students swelled the “Chinese student’s association,” Taiwanese students consolidated as the “Cornell University Taiwanese Student’s Association”; at its peak the group counted nearly 300 members including families. In the 60s–70s the association communicated in Taiwanese; later generations mixed Mandarin in.
-
Cornell also appears in the Hakka movement record: 110. 話說美洲台灣客家社團 (Hsing-fu Wang) lists 3rd-term THA-USA president Yung-pin Liu as based in Cornell, NY (Nov. 1991).
-
The Ithaca Taiwanese hometown association continues the same community lineage on campus: TAA 綺色佳(伊薩卡)臺灣同鄉會 (2017).
-
Cornell’s place in the movement record extends beyond the association itself: community memoir 2021) recalls how Lee Teng-hui’s 1995 return to his alma mater Cornell — “民之所欲,長在我心” — 轟動全球, a defining moment for the Cornell Taiwanese community.
-
Earlier Cornell Taiwanese figures surface in church memoir 2019): 黃介山 of 樹林, a 長老教會 believer, first studied at 康乃爾大學 before transferring to Stanford, later anchoring the Bay Area Taiwanese church community.
-
Cornell was also a performance stop for the movement’s cultural network: 15. Taiwanese Choral Society of Rochester 羅徹斯特臺灣同鄕會愛鄕合唱團 (2014-12) records the 愛鄕合唱團 being invited to sing at Cornell University.

Corpus re-grep 2026-09-24 (slice 09230500-26): SKIP — fresh grep of works+articles for CTSA / Cornell Taiwanese / 康乃爾臺灣同學會 returns only substring collisions (wayback archive_digest strings containing “CTSA”; the ACTSA 法案 in a TJJ news item). No corpus text names the association itself beyond the directory record; all community material above (伊薩卡同鄉會 memoir, THA-USA, Ithaca TAA, 1995 Cornell 演講, 愛鄉合唱團) already absorbed. Verified saturated.
-
Corpus re-grep 2026-09-25 (slice 09240500-17): SKIP — same result: hits are only TJJ news substring collisions (ACTSA/CTSA strings), no corpus text names the association. All community material above already absorbed. Verified saturated.

Corpus re-grep 2026-09-25 (slice 09250800-14): fresh grep (Cornell Taiwanese / CTSA / 康乃爾臺灣同學會, works+articles) hits are audit-file noise only (P1_SIMILAR_TITLE / MISSING_PAGE lines in nightly audit digests), no new corpus narrative. The audit itself flags a near-duplicate sibling page Taiwanese American Student Association at Cornell (jaccard 0.800) — HOLD: possible alias vs. distinct successor org, never merged. Also flagged: “Cornell Taiwanese” mentioned 3x across Cornell Taiwanese American Society, this page, and Joseph H. Chen — related Cornell-lineage pages, no new facts. Verified saturated otherwise.
