Formosan Christians for Self Determination was a movement founded in 1973 to mobilize overseas Taiwanese to advocate for the right of the Taiwanese people to determine their own destiny. On March 19, 1973, four founders — including Reverend Huang Chang-hui — convened 21 representatives from across the United States and Canada in Washington, D.C. The following day, a press conference was held at the National Press Club, where the ‘Declaration of the Formosan People’s Self-Determination Movement’ was formally read aloud. The movement publicly declared its intent to unite overseas Taiwanese compatriots in pursuit of the sacred right and freedom of self-determination for the people of Taiwan.
Role in the Community
- Co-initiators named in our memoirs: Rev. Chang-hui Huang (黃彰輝), Rev. Wu-tung Huang (黃武東), Prof. Tsong-yi Lin (林宗義) and Rev. Choan-seng Song (宋泉盛), responding to the Presbytery Church’s 1971-12-29 對國是的聲明與建議 (Our Journeys 357 — Bay Area TJJ history).
- In 1973 the Palo Alto 協志會 (TAA-WC) held a founding-meeting野餐 where Prof. 林宗義 lectured on the 臺灣人民自決運動; the self-determination movement’s ideas circulated widely through Bay Area church circles (Our Journeys 357).
- In Aug 1973 the North American Formosan Association coordinated with the NY 台灣人民自決會 (Rev. 宋泉盛) and 方菊雄 to expose KMT violence at the Williamsport Little League giant-team final (Our Journeys 76 — 全美會 history).
- The movement’s source documents were later edited by Rev. 宋泉盛 into 《出頭天:台灣人民自決運動史料》(人光出版社, 1988) (Our Journeys 350 — Bay Area church history).
- Co-initiator Rev. 黃彰輝 remained a front-rank movement voice for the next decade: he was a headline speaker at the first 美南台灣人夏令會 (1984-06-08–10, Sam Houston State University, theme 台灣人應有的信仰與使命, 300–400 attendees), evidence of the self-determination generation’s reach through regional TAA networks (Our Journeys 318 — 美南同鄉會與夏令會史).
- The movement has its own dedicated first-hand histories in the corpus: co-initiator Rev. Wu-tung Huang (黃武東) authored 自決運動的開始及其活動 ( 2014-09), and 張顏千鶴 documented the movement’s work in New York through 紐約恩惠歸正教會 ( 2015-09).
- In Rev. 黃武東’s survey of the overseas movement (2016) the movement is listed among the Christian-body organizations of the overseas community with its national office at 475 Riverside Dr, New York (the Presbytery/PC(USA) building, matching the movement’s church-base anchoring).
- At the 美國南區台灣民眾大會 (1975-05-28, Houston — site of the 台灣四百年史詩 and the 全美台灣同鄉會 emblem), 台灣人民自決運動 was represented by 魏瑞明, speaking alongside 陳錦芳 (世界台灣同鄉會), 張燦鍙 (台灣獨立聯盟) and 彭明敏 (台灣研究所) (2017).
- KMT censorship of the movement’s record reached even publications inside Taiwan: the 1986 台灣教會公報社 volume had 黃彰輝’s preface and the overseas Christians’ self-determination-response essay seized at 桃園機場 customs and forced out of the island edition (Our Journeys 220).
- The movement’s name and cause are carried forward in the corpus by the 2017 work 《Self-Determination 出頭天》(Self-Determination 出頭天, 2017-05-05).
- The directory’s own record page is held in our corpus at Formosar Chriotion for Self Determination 臺灣人民自決運動.
