Café Philo (哲學星期五, literally ‘Philosophy Friday’) is a civic forum series that began on August 13, 2010, originally as part of the Youth Platform (青平台) initiative in Taiwan, becoming independently operated through small-scale fundraising in 2012. The forum holds regular and ad hoc citizen dialogues on topics spanning politics, human rights, education, and the arts. A companion series, ‘Philosophy Non-Friday’ (哲學「非」星期五), was established in August 2012 to explore unconventional civic and imaginative topics. The format has expanded to multiple U.S. cities — New York, Boston, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and New Jersey — as well as universities in Taiwan. The New Jersey chapter (NJ Café Philo) focuses on connecting young immigrant families through discussions of parenting, health, and education.
Role in the Community

The U.S. Cafe Philo chapters grew directly out of the networks built organising Sunflower Movement (2014) solidarity rallies among overseas Taiwanese graduate students; the corpus record additionally names Seattle among the U.S. locations alongside New York and Boston (no date conflict — directory and memoir simply list different chapter sets). The New York chapter was the movement’s busiest U.S. node: per the New Bloom memoir it held events weekly near Times Square, using offices software engineer 蕭新晟 (Hsiao Hsin-cheng) used for his company, and the memoir names the U.S. Cafe Philo — alongside the Chicago Round Table and London’s Formosa Salon — as a direct product of post-Sunflower overseas student organising (2021).

New York chapter organiser 劉彥廷 (Café Philo NYC) co-presented a session on influencing U.S. media coverage of Taiwan with FAPA’s new generation (杜荷州) at the 海台青 (Overseas Taiwanese Youth) conference in 2017, which trained community organisers via g0v-style workshops; the same corpus account records the conference’s three U.S.-advocacy sessions (在美行動施力點 / 組織經營工作坊 / 政治議題思辨) and talks on winning U.S. political support by Global Taiwan Institute 執行長 Russell Hsiao and FAPA 副會長 林希明. Boston Café Philo (波士頓哲學星期五) was a co-organiser (協辦) of the 2021 online 二二八 commemoration series run by 全美台灣同鄉會 (TAA) with 國家人權博物館 and others — two weeks of exhibitions, films and forums drawing 1,000+ in-person/online participants across four U.S. time zones. (全美台灣同鄉會2021年二二八紀念系列活動)

New York Cafe Philo also served as the organising hub for g0v hackathons in New York City (“organised by the New York Cafe Philo crowd”), and the post-Sunflower chapters practised deliberate intergenerational collaboration — students worked with elders of the overseas movement, including former political-blacklist figures, and with institutions such as the Taiwan Center (Flushing) and The Base (Brooklyn). The New Bloom memoir frames this sociality (“the fun social aspect”) as what kept organisers engaged. (2021)

The TAH directory entry itself is a band-B bibliographic record published 2016-04-04, an early snapshot of the forum series while it was still expanding to U.S. cities. (Fri. Philo 哲學星期五, TAH record 2016-04-04)
