Hsinchu High School Alumni Association of North America is an alumni organization connecting graduates of Hsinchu High School (founded 1922 in Hsinchu, Taiwan) living across North America. The association was formally established on June 12, 2004 in Cincinnati, Ohio under the leadership of Dr. Franklin Y. H. Lee (Class 1956). It holds biennial conferences rotating among its regional chapters, with inaugural and subsequent meetings held in Cincinnati (2004), Chicago (2006), and Foster City, California (2008). The association includes chapters in Southern California, Chicago, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Dayton, Houston, New England, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Vancouver, Toronto, and Ontario. Notable alumni include Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Professor Yuan T. Lee (Class 1955).
Role in the Community
The TAH corpus carries the association’s own profile and member records alongside the directory entry. Its founding president, Dr. Franklin Y. H. Lee (李彥輝醫師, Class 1956), is profiled in the TAH “231” profile series as the first president (2004/05) — Dr. Franklin Lee 李彥輝, founding president. The association publishes its own newsletter, held in the corpus as 北美新竹中學校友會會訊 (2018), and a regional chapter, the Greater Philadelphia alumni association, is recorded separately at 大費城區新竹中學校友會 (2016). The corpus shows the chapter predates the North America-wide body: Dr. Franklin Y. H. Lee was already profiled as the first president of the Hsinchu High School Alumni Association — Greater Philadelphia in a record dated 1993-05-01 ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/232-dr-franklin-lee-e6-9d-8e-e5-bd-a5-e8-bc-9d-e9-86-ab-e5-b8-ab-the-first-presi|TAH #232]]) — over a decade before he led the 2004 North America founding, an organizing sequence (regional chapter first, continental body later) typical of the alumni-association wave in the community record. The 2017 organizational profile itself is at TAH profile, 2017.
Alumni memoirs show the movement pedigree behind the association: in his TAH “Our Journeys” memoir, HCHS valedictorian-class alumnus 陳淮崇 (Huai-Chung Chen, in the US from 1962) recounts leaving the KMT and becoming a 台獨 activist within a week of arriving at K-State, then co-founding the Baltimore/Washington (1967), Houston (1970), and New Jersey (1973) 台灣同鄉會 — community-organizing lineage that the alumni association inherits (Our Journeys 138).
