The Michigan Taiwanese Student Association (MTSA) is a Taiwanese student organization at the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor. Its university-hosted website describes it as a portal for Michigan Taiwanese students, offering resources and community for those studying and living in Ann Arbor. MTSA maintains a companion Google Sites wiki (MTSA 知識庫) that serves as a collaborative resource for Taiwanese students navigating academic and daily life at UMich, covering topics such as coursework, housing, and life in Ann Arbor. The organization is listed in the University of Michigan’s official Maize Pages club directory and is recognized by the LSA Asian Languages and Cultures department’s student organization listing.
Role in the Community
- In the movement era the association (then styled the University of Michigan Taiwanese Students’ Association) co-published the Taiwan Monitor with the Ann Arbor Taiwanese Association; when the Monitor planned a special issue for the 20th anniversary of Chen Wen-chen’s death it asked Yung Hwa Hsu to recount the events of that year, and he used the occasion to publicize the friends who had been doing risky underground work — see Establishment of the Chen Wen-Chen Memorial Foundation and Professor Chen Wen-Chen Memorial Foundation.
- Same memoir circle: in 1979 two Michigan Taiwanese (I-hsiung Lin and Bernie Huang) sent funds to Shih Ming-teh via First Bank in Taipei under the Ann Arbor Taiwanese Association name — community support from the Ann Arbor Michigan Taiwanese milieu documented in the same record.
- Today a recognized UMich student organization (Maize Pages; LSA Asian Languages and Cultures listing) with a companion MTSA 知識庫 wiki for incoming Taiwanese students.
- The joint publication itself is held in the corpus: Taiwan Monitor 台風眼, the Taiwanese community newspaper of the TAA Ann Arbor, Detroit, and Lansing chapters — Taiwan Monitor 台風眼. The founding memoir was also republished in the 台美史料中心 newsletter archive — TA Archives March 2021 newsletter (2026 capture).
