North Shore Club (北濱會)

Identity Snapshot

  • English: North Shore Club
  • Chinese: 北濱會
  • Era: Contemporary
  • Geography: Taiwanese American community
  • Core roles: Community organization (TAH directory)

The North Shore Club is a rotating savings and social organization (標會) founded by Taiwanese American families living on Chicago’s North Shore. The group was established approximately in 1978 when around a dozen Taiwanese American households lived in the area, with children of preschool and elementary school age. Its primary purpose is fellowship and monthly communal dining, with the rotating savings (標會) function serving as a secondary activity. Monthly gatherings were traditionally held potluck-style at the home of the winning bidder, where members socialized late into the night — men often discussing Taiwanese politics and the democracy movement, women sharing family matters and offering mutual support. Children in the group grew up together and formed close, sibling-like bonds.

Role in the Community

Primary source: member memoir by 林壽英 (Christine Yang), written Libertyville, IL 8/13/2002, published in TAH record 2016 (value band A — community history); directory record at North Shore Club 北濱會.

  • Unlike Taiwanese 標會 there was no 會頭 — only members. Over more than two decades of uninterrupted monthly meetings, no member ever defaulted (倒會).
  • Membership grew from ~a dozen households to 20+; by the 2002 cycle it had shrunk to 13 households — the smallest since founding, as children grew up and left and older members retired to warmer climates.
  • Meetings moved from home potlucks at the winner’s house to restaurants and theater outings; the 肇輝 and 信惠 couple kept hosting New Year holiday potlucks at their home with karaoke.
  • Member Dr. 楊正聰’s wife Nancy (漢名淑雅), a Swedish裔 American, was noted for her self-taught authentic Taiwanese cooking (炒米粉, 梅干菜扣肉, 烤鴨) at club gatherings.
  • In later years no one wanted to 標, so the winner was chosen by forced lottery.
