The Organization For The Support of Democratic Movement of Taiwan was founded in 1979 by a group of overseas Taiwanese youth — led by Lin Hsiao-hsin (known as ‘Old Lin’) — who carried on the spirit of the Defend Diaoyu Islands movement and redirected their energies toward supporting democratic and social reform in Taiwan. The organization was active across the U.S. Midwest and East Coast, hosting annual summer camps and symposiums to connect students and Chinese Americans who cared about Taiwan’s development. Members collectively analyzed cross-strait situations and strategized ways to support Taiwan’s democratic movements from abroad. The organization published a periodical called ‘Democratic Taiwan’ (民主台灣, also subtitled 台灣民主運動支援會通訊) as a key vehicle for communication and advocacy.
