Overseas Taiwanese for Democracy (海外台灣青年陣線) is a North American coalition of overseas Taiwanese youth organizations that emerged from the transnational solidarity efforts surrounding Taiwan’s 2014 Sunflower Movement, during which overseas Taiwanese students helped amplify international coverage of the occupation of Taiwan’s Parliament in protest of the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement. The organization draws from a long lineage of overseas Taiwanese democracy activists and seeks to unite Taiwanese youth in North America around civic consciousness and Taiwanese identity. Its activities include annual conferences, issue-based study and action on topics such as history, law, economics, ethnicity, and gender, as well as outreach to connect with international civil society. The group explicitly advocates for Taiwanese independence as a long-term goal and aims to cultivate the next generation of civic leaders committed to social reform. In 2015, the organization held an annual conference themed around cross-generational Taiwanese subjectivity.
