Founding memoir: [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys37-eng|Our Journeys #37 (Eng.)]] — the South Bay Taiwanese Association was established in 1972 out of a student-club network; its first symposium was held 1972-08-25 at Ching C. Shir’s home in San Jose, with Stanford researcher Chieh-shan Huang keynoting on Taiwan’s household registration system, after which symposia ran twice monthly.
-
Ho Yilin’s Bay Area社团 history 357. 舊金山灣區臺灣人的社團活動與家國意識之形成 (何義麟, 2020) records 北加州南灣同鄉會 as founded in 1971, first president 謝鐐暲 (IBM), with Stanford’s 黃介山 and IBM’s 石清正 running the reading group that grew into 臺灣協志會; it also dates the federation 北加州臺灣同鄉組織聯合會 to 1973-09-22, created by seven bodies (South Bay, SE Bay, East Bay, and San Francisco hometown associations, two Taiwanese Christian fellowships, and 協志會). HOLD: conflict on founding year — 357 says 1971, the founding memoir above (#37) says 1972; dates not merged.
-
First Bay Area hometown association, per TAFNC’s own memoir: [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys38-eng|Our Journeys #38 (Eng.)]], the TAFNC 30-year history, states that in the early 1970s 「At first, there was only the South Bay Taiwanese Association」 before the East Bay, Southeast Bay, and San Francisco associations followed — placing South Bay as the first official Taiwanese association in the Bay Area. It further records that the idea to federate was discussed at a picnic hosted by the South Bay Taiwanese Association in 1973, leading to the 1973-08-17 preparatory meeting at 黃介山’s home and TAFNC’s founding 1973-09-22; South Bay remains one of the five founding member associations.
-
Later activity records: the corpus also holds the annual-meeting yearbook 588. 北加州南灣台灣同鄉會年會2007-2008 (2008-09), extending the magazine run documented by 586 into the 2000s under the 北加州 name.
Corpus context for the 北加州 lineage: 350. 美國舊金山灣區台灣基督教會史料簡介 (何義麟, 2019) records that 協志會 created the youth group South Bay Taiwanese Youth (SBTY) in 1978-05, and that Bay Area hometown groups and churches federated into the 北加州台灣同鄉聯合會 (NCFF) founded 1973-09 — the umbrella under which Northern California “South Bay” organizations operated. A sibling Bay Area body is separately recorded in the corpus: South East Bay Taiwanese Association (SEBTA).
HOLD: conflict — this page lists the association as “of S. California” (Taiwan Center LA group-member listing), but all corpus records title it 北加州南灣台灣同鄉會 (Northern California). Whether these are the same body or two regional associations with the same Chinese name is unresolved; not merged.
