The North American Taiwan Literature Research Association was founded on October 30, 1982, at the Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Its establishment was catalyzed by the visit of renowned Taiwanese author Yang Kui (楊逵), who traveled from Iowa to Los Angeles and presided over the founding gathering. The organization brought together Taiwanese writers and literature enthusiasts across North America, with 14 founding members including notable figures such as 許達然, 杜國清, 陳芳明, 陳若曦, 謝里法, and others, plus Yang Kui as an honorary member. The founding event drew over 200 attendees from across the United States and marked the opening of Taiwanese cultural activities in the Los Angeles community.
Role in the Community
- 1982-10 — 楊逵’s visit to Southern California catalyzed the founding; per 林衡哲’s memoir it was the first postwar overseas-Taiwanese “台灣文學研究會”, with 許達然、陳芳明、林衡哲、洪銘水 among those who contributed to its establishment: 林衡哲 (memoir, band A).
- 1982–1993 — the association lasted eleven years, invited 李喬 and ten-plus other Taiwan writers to lecture in the US, and published 100+ papers on Taiwanese literature (per the same memoir).
