Taiwan Care Inc. (關懷台灣基金會)

Identity Snapshot

  • English: Taiwan Care Inc.
  • Chinese: 關懷台灣基金會
  • Era: Contemporary
  • Geography: Taiwanese American community
  • Core roles: Community organization (TAH directory)

Taiwan Care Inc. is a Taiwanese American nonprofit organization rooted in the New Jersey Taiwanese community, which itself grew out of the broader wave of Taiwanese student immigration to the United States beginning in the late 1950s. The organization has its origins in the New Jersey Taiwanese Association, which formed in the late 1960s to early 1970s around New Brunswick and served as a social and cultural hub for Taiwanese immigrants in the region. As Taiwan’s democratic movement intensified following the Formosa Incident (Meilidao), the New Jersey community became a key stop on North American tours by Taiwan’s democracy activists, with members providing hospitality and financial support. Taiwan Care Inc. was established to formalize and sustain this support for democratic and civic causes in Taiwan in a more organized and ongoing manner.

Role in the Community

  • The organization maintains its own editorial desk (關懷台灣基金會編輯部) inside the community press: it contributed the entry on itself to the 「台美人顧台灣」(Care for Taiwan by Taiwanese American) series of community giving, recorded at 108. Care for Taiwan by Taiwanese American: 11. Taiwanese Care, Inc. 關懷台灣基金會 (2015-02).

  • HOLD: naming conflict — directory page and most records say Taiwan Care Inc., but the 2015 series entry and the NJ community survey below title the org Taiwanese Care, Inc. / TaiwaneseCare, Inc. Never auto-merged.

  • TAH holds a dedicated organizational record: Taiwan Care Inc. 關懷台灣基金會 (published 2014-10-12).

  • Founded 1986 — the foundation’s own 10-year retrospective self-introduction (紐澤西關懷台灣基金會, 1996-06) states it was established in 1986 by a group of New Jersey–settled Taiwanese 基於回饋故鄉、關愛美麗島的心情, with the stated purpose of 提升對台灣文化的認識 and 獎勵及以金錢贊助在台灣的弱勢團體及個人.

  • Classified as a 政治社團 (political/voluntary-advocacy association) in the New Jersey community survey (Our Journeys 356), listed alongside FAPA NJ, 台獨聯盟 (whose key figures lived in North Jersey, the foundation’s main area of operation and large-event organizing), and other NJ Taiwanese organizations.
