Role in the Community
Per the chapter’s own history
- 1960s roots: East-coast Taiwan students gathered as the “East Coast Formosan Club,” meeting each Christmas season at International House (I House) near Columbia and Riverside Church in Manhattan; many community marriages trace to these gatherings.
(TAA), registered in Washington DC as “Formosan Club of America, Inc.” 美東同鄕會 reorganized as the TAA 大紐約分會; its former satellites (波士頓、康州、綺色佳、費城、巴爾的摩、華府) joined TAA directly.
- Movement stage: 1971 民衆大會 in NYC (~2,000 attendees); a follow-up event in Washington DC in 1972; hosted the 世界台灣同鄕會聯合會 second annual conference in 1975.
- Venues: I House → Hunter College High School (~1973–74) → Senator Robert Wagner High School (1975) → Queens/Flushing as immigration patterns shifted; 台灣人會館 later became the hub for TAANY and other groups.
- Mission (per charter):
Yearbook, chapter newsletter.
- Movement actions (from TAA & memoir corpus): 1973 — coordinated with the national TAA and 台灣人民自決會 (宋泉盛牧師) against KMT bullying of Taiwanese spectators at the Williamsport Little League finals; the NY chapter (per 吳澧培’s TAA memoir Mu-Sheng Wu) worked with 方菊雄 and letter campaigns to Williamsport citizens and press ( 許民能 recalls riding the NY chapter’s chartered bus and the “Team of Taiwan, Not Rep of China” banner stand-off). 1983 — chapter president 楊黃美幸 and ~20–30 members formally applied to visit Taiwan; the KMT refused except for 楊黃美幸 and 一位美國小姐, an early probe of the 回台 ban that LA’s 1984 delegation followed ( 謝清志).
- Cultural work: hosted the Passport to Taiwan Festival 台灣巡禮文化藝術節 (record, 2017-05-02).
- Chapter history record: the chapter’s own brief history is held in the TAH corpus as New York Chapter 大紐約區台灣同鄕會簡介 and Taiwanese American Association of New York 大紐約區台灣同鄉會; paper newsletters catalogued at New York Chapter newsletters.
- 2020-12 WHO 連署: among the 31 Greater-New York Taiwanese groups (with 大紐約區台灣人社團聯合會, 紐約台灣會館, 紐約台灣商會) co-signing the 大紐約地區支持台灣參與WHO共同宣言 (TJJ record, webinar statement).
(Jennifer Liu), returning to her US job, completed her 罷韓二階連署 at the 光復高雄罷韓總部 before boarding her flight; the group’s stated reason: 韓國瑜「落跑」選總統 shortly after taking office as mayor (TJJ, 2025-12-09).
