Identity Snapshot

  • English: Taiwanese American Council
  • Chinese: 紐約紐澤西台灣人社團聯合會
  • Era: Contemporary
  • Geography: Taiwanese American community
  • Core roles: Community organization (TAH directory)

The Taiwanese American Council (紐約紐澤西台灣人社團聯合會) was founded in 1982 by Dr. Sheng-nan Hsu (許盛男), who served as its first president. The organization was established to coordinate activities among Taiwanese community organizations in the greater New York and New Jersey area, strengthening ties and mutual support between member groups. Founding member organizations included the Greater New York Taiwanese Association, the New Jersey Taiwanese Association, the Professor Chen Wen-chen Memorial Foundation, the New York chapter of the Taiwanese Human Rights Association, the New York chapter of the Formosan Association for Public Affairs (FAPA), and the Taiwan Studies Association.

Role in the Community

From the community record (member memoirs):

  • The Council’s founding in 1982 was remembered by Patrick Huang, who attended Council meetings representing the NY Taiwan Society, as “a watershed in the birth of a Taiwan Center” — Council meetings routinely discussed establishing a Taiwan Center, though the Council at the time was “more symbolic than realistic” in strength ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys9-eng|Our Journeys #9, Patrick Huang]]).

  • 1983 — Patrick Huang took over from Dr. Sheng-nan Hsu (許盛男) as the second president of the Council, and made the Taiwan Center his priority: he invited Mrs. Yi-Yi Chang (real estate) to plan the purchase and took fundraising on himself.

  • September 1983 — under Huang, the Council announced “People’s Fundraising Regulations” (人民募款辦法), modeling collection of the Taiwan Center Building Fund on Taiwanese temple festivals — head-count collecting at every activity — to make fundraising long-term and grassroots.

  • November 12, 1983 — a $10-per-head dinner at East Garden Restaurant, Manhattan (organized by Jong-Guan Lin, who covered the shortfall) established the Taiwan Center Building Committee: 42 founding members including Dr. Hong-Tien Lai, with a 21-member Executive Committee including Lung-Fong Chen; Rev. Wu-Dong Huang and World Federation of Taiwanese Associations president Dr. Tu Chen spoke. All at the Council’s initiative as the umbrella body of NY/NJ Taiwanese groups ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys9-eng|Our Journeys #9]]; ourjourneys09, Chinese version).

  • The Council’s successor umbrella, 大紐約區台灣人社團聯合會 (Taiwanese American Council of Greater New York), appears in the 2017 TAH directory record (directory entry).

  • The Council and its member associations (incl. NATMA, NATPA, NATWA, the hoteliers’ association) later coordinated on the 1990 census campaign ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys253|Our Journeys #253]]).

  • The Council appears as #38 (紐約紐澤西台灣人社團聯合會) in the SETAA 夏令會 member-group roster record ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys356|Our Journeys #356]]; English ed.), and its own TAH directory story page is archived in-corpus (TAH directory work).

Contemporary civic action (2021 WHA campaign)

  • May 2021 — 大紐約區台灣人社團聯合會 (Taiwanese American Council of Greater New York) co-signed the “大紐約地區支持台灣參與WHO共同宣言” with 大紐約區台灣同鄉會, 紐約台灣會館, 紐約台灣商會 and 27 other groups (31 groups total in the final declaration; 30 in the earlier joint-statement draft), condemning China’s obstruction of Taiwan’s participation in the 74th World Health Assembly. The Council’s convenor 賴弘典 (Lai Hung-Tien) spoke at the online forum hosted by 僑務委員莊振輝, alongside NATMA president-dr. 謝博夫 and 紐約台灣會館理事長蘇春槐 (taiwanjustice.net — 31 僑團挺台參與 WHO).
  • The earlier joint-statement draft (same month) shows the same coalition at 30 signatory groups before the final 31-group declaration (taiwanjustice.net — 挺台參與世衛).
  • Corpus re-grep 2026-10-10 (slice 10081200-29): fresh ZH+EN grep surfaced the two taiwanjustice-net WHA-campaign articles above — newly absorbed; prior hit set (ourjourneys9/-eng, ourjourneys09, ourjourneys356 ±eng, directory pages) unchanged.

  • Corpus re-grep 2026-10-13 (slice 10120800-28): SKIP — fresh ZH+EN grep across all 5 corpus dirs hit set identical again (ourjourneys9-eng, ourjourneys09, ourjourneys356 ±eng, both directory work pages, taiwanjustice WHA pair, works/index.md, sources/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org.md); verified-saturated, no new absorbable material. HOLD: Patrick Huang’s affiliation as recorded in the Chinese memoir text (ourjourneys09: 「代表台灣硏究會」 — Taiwan Studies Association) conflicts with the English translation (ourjourneys9-eng: “representing the NY Taiwan Society”) — never auto-merged; the founding-member roster in both editions lists 台灣研究會 (Taiwan Studies Association) as a founding group, which supports the ZH reading.
