Role in the Community

Corpus memoirs place the forum’s origin in the UCLA-era 讀書會 → 生活座談會 (Life Seminar) lineage: according to 劉天良’s recollection in 2016), the reading club became the 生活座談會 — a Southern California speaker-forum where members shared their professional expertise — which later developed into the present-day 台美人論壇 (“這就是它的脈絡與傳承”). The 生活座談會 is credited with training a generation of Southern California Taiwanese leaders able to speak on stage, among them 李木通, 黃根深, 郭清江, 謝清志, 王秋森, 蘇育德, 蔡滄波, and 江昭儀, several of whom later returned to Taiwan and contributed there.

By 2014–2016 the forum was an established Irvine-area community organization with annual leadership turnover. In Angel Chen’s memoir essay 2016), the group hosted a banquet talk by retired US Vice-Admiral Lyle G. Bien at the Atrium Hotel in Irvine; President Tom Liu gave closing remarks thanking the presidents of the previous four years, and Dr. Dennis Chen (President of NATMA, the North American Taiwanese Medical Association) noted the group was “positively reaching out to Americans instead of staying in a close small community.” The group itself is recorded in the Our Journeys collection as 37. Taiwanese American Perspectives 台美人論壇 (2016).

The name also appears earlier as the subtitle/perspective line of a 2012 essay on a 228 discussion panel in San Francisco, A Personal Discussion Panel in SF on the Events of 228: Taiwanese American Perspectives (2012-02-28) — whether this refers to the organization or to the essay’s framing (Taiwanese-American perspectives) is not stated in the source. HOLD: organization vs. essay-subtitle reading of the 2012 usage.
