The Taiwanese American Student Association (TASA) at UC Santa Barbara is a student-led social and cultural organization that celebrates and explores Taiwanese American culture. Officially recognized on UCSB’s Shoreline platform and listed by the university’s Asian Resource Center and Undergraduate Admissions office, TASA is open to students of all cultural backgrounds and describes its mission as fostering community, friendship, and cultural awareness through events, workshops, and service initiatives.
Role in the Community
UCSB has been a recurring host site for Taiwanese American community activity, of which TASA is the campus-facing student organization:
- The 2012 Taiwanese American Conference – West Coast (TAC-WC) was held at UC Santa Barbara, organized by Ken Huang (黃根深) and Darice Lee (洪珠美) after no other host came forward — see Our Journeys 352 (TAC-WC history).
- A night market event at UC Santa Barbara was covered by TaiwaneseAmerican.org on 2012-05-04 — see Night Market Event at UC Santa Barbara.
- The university hosts the Chuan Lyu Endowed Chair in Taiwan Studies (川流台灣研究傑出基金) — see Chuan Lyu Endowed Chair record.
- 2014-05-08 — a “UCSB Taiwanese Student Assoc.” is credited as a co-sponsor (with the Center for Taiwan Studies, Dept. of East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies, and TECO-LA) of the “Tongues of Heaven: Indigenous Articulations from Taiwan to Hawai’i” screening and talk at UCSB’s Social Science & Media Studies building — the corpus’s direct organizing credit for the student association, recorded in the promotional listing inside A Chat with Documentary Filmmaker Anita Chang (2014-05-07).
HOLD: apart from the 2014 sponsorship credit (which names the group as “UCSB Taiwanese Student Assoc.”, a variant of the page’s TASA name — treated as the same body, variant wording noted), the corpus records document Taiwanese American activity at UCSB but do not state that TASA itself organized those events; no further direct organizational link asserted.

No new absorbable facts.
- Re-grepped 2026-09-24 (slice 09230600-24): same hit set plus two 2025 taiwanjustice-net articles about UCSB’s Center for Taiwan Studies “Made in Taiwan” storytelling project (CTS/MiT, dir. Sabine Frühstück / Silke Werth) — campus Taiwan-studies activity, no stated TASA involvement; not absorbable as org fact. SKIP: verified saturated.
- Re-grepped 2026-09-25 (slice 09240600-22): same cluster (Chuan Lyu chair, Our Journeys 352, night market, Anita Chang listing) plus index/MANIFEST and one unrelated 2026 TJJ economy article mentioning Santa Barbara. Only direct TASA credit remains the 2014 “UCSB Taiwanese Student Assoc.” co-sponsorship already linked. SKIP-deepen (saturated).
- Re-grepped 2026-09-26 (slice 09250900-16): identical hit set (Chuan Lyu chair, OJ-352, night market, Anita Chang listing, index, one unrelated 2026 TJJ economy article). No new absorbable facts. SKIP (verified-saturated).
