Identity Snapshot

  • English: Taiwanese American Students Association of Northwestern University
  • Chinese: —
  • Era: Contemporary
  • Geography: Taiwanese American community
  • Core roles: Community organization (TAH directory)

The Taiwanese American Students Association (TASA) at Northwestern University is a student organization dedicated to celebrating Taiwanese and Taiwanese American culture on campus. Founded in 1992 under the name Taiwanese American Students Club (TASC), it was formally recognized by the Associated Student Government in January 1994. The organization has since grown from an original group of eight members into an ASG A-status organization welcoming students of all backgrounds.

Role in the Community

  • Pre-TASC campus context (band B): two corpus memoirs document an established Taiwanese graduate-student community at Northwestern (Evanston) from 1967 onward — newlyweds and student couples living together in Dryden/Engel Halls, mutual aid at weddings, weekend gatherings, and a Hokkien-speaking circle that drew non-Hokkien speakers into it: 林壽英, 275. 那段難忘的歲月 (2017-01), and Mrs. Christine Yang, 689. My Language Learning Journey (2019). HOLD: these memoirs predate TASC’s 1992 founding and do not name a campus organization; no continuity between the 1960s–70s graduate cohort and TASC/TASA is asserted by the corpus.

  • Firsthand member account (band A): Pamela’s memoir describes Northwestern’s TASC as her entry point into Taiwanese identity — planning Taiwanese cultural events, learning campus organizing (booking rooms, funding, outreach), joining the executive board as a sophomore, and moving on to ITASA conferences; the “Formosa Betrayed” era pushed her from culture nights toward 228/KMT-martial-law history. Finding Myself through the Taiwanese American Community (2013-03-14)

  • TASC-hosted cultural programming (band A title record): Northwestern’s TASC hosted a Taiwan Film Festival in November 2010 — Northwestern University’s TASC Hosts a Taiwan Film Festival (2010-11-14); the club is named as host in the work’s own title.

  • Campus activity recorded in the corpus around the club’s orbit: the ITASA Midwest Conference was held at Northwestern University in April 2011 — ITASA Midwest Conference at Northwestern University (2011-04-15); the “Dear Taiwan” documentary screened at Northwestern in November 2011 — “Dear Taiwan” Documentary Screens at Northwestern University (2011-11-13). HOLD: the corpus does not state which campus group organized each event.

  • Pre-TASC independence context (band A, new this slice): 897. Freedom Calling – American Journey of a Taiwan Expatriate (2024-01) records a Taiwanese graduate student at Northwestern in the mid-1950s whose reading of Silone’s Bread and Wine there radicalised him against injustice — he went on to launch Formosans’ Free Formosa (3F), described by its author as the first Taiwan independence movement organisation in North America. HOLD: 3F itself was founded in Philadelphia near Temple University, not at Northwestern; the memoir evidences early Taiwanese student presence and political ferment around the campus, not a TASC/TASA lineage.

  • Campus activity, expanded (band B title record): Will Tiao and Adam Kane of “Formosa Betrayed” appeared at Northwestern University in 2010 — Meet Formosa Betrayed’s Will Tiao and Adam Kane at Northwestern University (2010); same orbit as the 2010 TASC film festival above. HOLD: the work does not name the campus host.

  • 2026-09-25 corpus re-grep (slice 09250900-3, Northwestern): fresh grep adds the two hits absorbed above (my-stories-897 memoir, 2010 Formosa Betrayed campus appearance); remaining hits incidental — 67 (Kellogg curriculum mention), mystories65 (“Northwestern Airline”), ourjourneys270 (degree bio). Deepened.

SKIP-with-reason: verified-saturated.

  • 2026-09-24 corpus re-grep (slice 09230600-14, Northwestern/TASC): two additional hits beyond the linked set, both biographical incidental mentions, not club facts — 256 records a Northwestern med-school researcher, 270 records 劉淑媛’s Northwestern master’s; 65 matches only on “Northwestern Airline”. The Evanston/Dryden-Hall graduate-student circle is already covered by the two linked memoirs (275, 689). No new TASC/TASA facts — SKIP-with-reason: verified-saturated.
