Identity Snapshot

  • Chinese: —
  • Era: Contemporary
  • Geography: Taiwanese American community
  • Core roles: Community organization (TAH directory)

Taiwan Student Association at Syracuse University is a cultural organization of people interested in Taiwanese culture. Our group is not restricted to only Taiwanese students; we welcome people from any race and ethnicity. Our objectives are to promote Taiwan and Taiwanese Culture across campus to students and faculty as well as increase awareness of Taiwan’s position in the International Arena.

Role in the Community

  • The Syracuse campus group entered the national movement record through the Taiwanese Association of America’s own history: during the term of TAA’s second president 許和瑞 (Ho Rui Hsu), Syracuse (founding contact 郭勝義, Sheng-I Kuo) was one of nine new chapters added, bringing TAA to 43 chapters nationwide — Our Journeys 76: TAA early history (EN: ourjourneys76-eng).
  • After the first East Coast Summer Conference (July 1973, Camp Taconic, New York), chapter delegates voted to continue it, and 王秋森 (Chiu-Sen Wang) of the Syracuse Taiwanese Association agreed to organize the 1974 East Coast Summer Conference — the start of the unbroken annual regional summer-conference tradition that then spread to the West Coast, South, and Midwest (Our Journeys 76).
  • Community chapter records in the corpus: TAA 雪城台灣同鄉會, Syracuse 雪城台灣同鄕會簡介, and a chapter newsletter held in the vault: Newsletter 鄉訊 by Syracuse Taiwanese Association 雪城台灣同鄉會(2017-01-05,書目紀錄).
  • Later regional footprint: the Ithaca alumni record credits 李俊廷 of Syracuse with supporting 美東夏令營 and 北美壘球、高爾夫球比賽 events (2017).
  • The campus group sat inside the movement’s social and sports fabric: memoirs of early Taiwanese student organizing record Syracuse — alongside Ann Arbor, East Lansing, and Detroit — as one of the first US campuses where Taiwanese students took up baseball in the late 1960s, the seed of the inter-city 福爾摩莎杯 (Formosa Cup) softball tournament tradition (Our Journeys 185 — early East Coast settlement and 福杯起源); the Pittsburgh Taiwanese Association’s inter-city fellowship trips likewise reached Syracuse, with softball games at every stop (Our Journeys 292 — Pittsburgh Taiwanese Association).
  • HOLD: corpus records name the campus group as the Syracuse Taiwanese Association / TAA Syracuse chapter; the student association’s own founding date is not in the corpus, so no founding year is asserted here.
