The Taiwanese Student Association (TSA) at UCLA is a student organization dedicated to uniting the Taiwanese community on campus. Founded in 1988, TSA is one of the longer-standing Taiwanese student groups at the university. Its stated mission is to gather Taiwanese people, host events related to Taiwanese cultures and traditions, and help Taiwanese students integrate into UCLA life across both cultural and academic dimensions. The organization’s email address (ucla.tsa.1988@gmail.com) and a 2025 ASUCLA publication both reference the 1988 founding year.

Role in the Community

The UCLA campus was one of the earliest hubs of organized Taiwanese student activity in the US. Decades before TSA’s 1988 founding, a 1960s UCLA-centered study group (陳嶄新, 李木通, 黃根深, 王秋森, 陳松貞 and others) met weekly for talks and reading reports — the embryo of the 生活座談會 movement, per 劉天良’s memoir 生活座談會簡史, and recalled directly in 李木通/黃樹人’s memoir of UCLA in that era 半世紀前 UCLA的那些日子. TSA (founded 1988) is the contemporary continuation of this student organizing lineage on campus.

HOLD: the corpus memoirs document pre-1988 Taiwanese student activity at UCLA but do not mention TSA itself; no direct corpus record of TSA’s own founding or activities was found (only the TAH directory and the 1988-dated contact email). Related campus organizations exist as separate pages: Taiwanese American Student Association at UCLA and UCLA Taiwanese American Union — HOLD: relationship among the three UCLA groups unresolved.

Corpus re-verify (deepen-x 09260800-21, 2026-09-30): fresh grep of works/ + articles/ for ‘Taiwanese Student Association at UCLA’ / ‘ucla.tsa’ / ‘TSA UCLA’ returns no direct TSA-UCLA record. Nearest corpus neighbors are other campuses only — 燒肉粽 by USC Taiwanese Student Association 南加大台灣同學會 (USC, 2017), OSU Taiwanese Student Association, TSA at University of Washington and 33. TSA – University of Kansas, The First TSA, 1961 — cited here as context that peer-campus TSAs are separately documented, not as UCLA records. SKIP; nothing new absorbable, HOLD notes stand.
