Taiwanese Student Association at University of Washington
Identity Snapshot
- English: Taiwanese Student Association at University of Washington
- Chinese: —
- Era: Contemporary
- Geography: Taiwanese American community
The Taiwanese Student Association at the University of Washington (TSAUW), also known by its Chinese name 華盛頓大學台灣學生會, is a registered student organization dedicated to improving Taiwanese cultural awareness on campus and in the Greater Seattle area. The organization’s website and UW career center listing both confirm it is open to students of all backgrounds — not just those of Taiwanese heritage — and that its programming spans both cultural and social events throughout the academic year.
Role in the Community
-
The TAHS story corpus holds a dedicated record of the organization itself — “Taiwanese Student Association at the University of Washington (TSA) 華大台灣學生會,” published 2014-10-12 (TSA 華大台灣學生會 corpus record) — placing TSAUW in the documented roster of Taiwanese student groups across U.S. campuses (cf. the 1961 University of Kansas TSA, USC, OSU, and UW–Madison clubs in the same corpus).
-
Community memoir record: David Chen (David Lip-Ui Tan), a Seattle-raised Taiwanese American who majored in Civil Engineering at UW, credits the University of Washington Taiwanese Student Association — alongside the Taiwanese Association of Greater Seattle and Seattle Formosan Christian Church — as the organizations that shaped his Taiwanese identity and growth before he moved to Orange County. -
Disambiguation: the corpus memoir by 劉兆民 describing a “UW Formosan Students Club” chartered in 1963 (周烒明; the 黃啟明 detention affair) concerns the University of Wisconsin–Madison, not UW Seattle — that 1963 Madison club is remembered as the first Taiwanese student club in the U.S., and its record should not be attributed to TSAUW. -
2000 — the association (recorded in the corpus as “TSA of Washington University, Seattle”) staged the First Taiwan Night Market Festival in the U.S., documented as story-corpus record #136: 2000 (record logged 2016-01-06; bibliographic record only, full text in vault).

Corpus re-check 2026-09-22: fresh grep returns the organization’s own corpus record TSA 華大台灣學生會 corpus record, the works index, the already-absorbed David Chen interview, and story record #136 (absorbed above). Other TSA grep hits concern other campuses (UW–Madison 布袋戲團 in Our Journeys 277, Rutgers TSA) and are not attributable to TSAUW. HOLD: corpus title says “Washington University, Seattle” — no Seattle institution by that name; read as University of Washington per the Seattle locator, but the naming discrepancy is noted, not merged.
Re-grep 2026-09-24 (slice 09230500-21): fresh ZH+EN grep (華大台灣學生會/TSAUW/TSA at University of Washington) returns only the org’s own corpus record and the works index — hit set identical to the absorbed set above. Verified saturated.
- Corpus ecosystem note (2026-09-25): the same 2014-10-12 corpus batch records a companion UW campus group — Taiwanese Overseas Students Association (TOSA) 華大海外同學會 (TOSA 華大海外同學會) — a distinct organization on the same campus; noted, not merged.
- Re-grep 2026-09-25 (slice 09240400-1): fresh ZH+EN grep (華大台灣學生會/TSAUW/Taiwanese Student Association at University of Washington) across works/ + articles/ returns only the org’s own corpus record and the works index — hit set already absorbed above; verified saturated.
- Re-grep 2026-09-25 (slice 09250700-2): fresh ZH+EN grep returns only the org’s own corpus record + works index — same saturated set; nothing new absorbable.
