The CYCNY Youth Orchestra is a Queens-based youth orchestra founded in 1996 and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2002. It provides orchestra training and performance opportunities for students aged 10–18, with a repertory spanning Classical, Popular, Jazz, Broadway, Film, and Asian music. The orchestra premieres and commissions works by American and Asian composers, and has organized multiple concert tours to Asia, Europe, and across the United States. Weekly rehearsals are held at Middle School 158 in Bayside, New York, with two formal annual concerts: a free Holiday Concert in Queens and an Annual Concert at Lincoln Center. The orchestra also serves the broader Queens community through performances at senior centers, community centers, and nursing homes.

Role in the Community

  • Recorded in the TAH Foundation encyclopedia as directory entry 13. Youth Orchestra, CYCNY 紐約幼獅青少年管弦樂團.
  • The orchestra’s own concert archive is held in the corpus, including a tape recording of its April/May 2015 performances: TAPE.
  • The orchestra’s own community performances are documented across the TAH corpus: faculty concerts 琴韻飄香音樂會 in Flushing (2004), a concert at the Taiwan Center 台灣會館音樂會, Flushing (2015), the annual concert (06) and the holiday concert in Bayside (2018).
  • The ensemble’s own documentary archive in the corpus spans two decades of concerts: the 2002 Christmas concert live recording conducted by Jeffrey Liang ( Jeffrey Liang) and the 2005/05 concert music CD (05, 音樂CD), the annual-concert program/magazine run 2006–2015 (565. 年度音樂會雜誌 2006–2015), the 2016 annual concert at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center (2016), program books and DVDs of the 2018 annual concert (2018) and the 2020 Holiday Concert (172. CYCNY Holiday Concert 2020) — corroborating the Lincoln Center annual-concert record with a continuous paper-and-recording trail.
  • A photo-album/activity record of the orchestra is held separately: 32. Youth Orchestra, CYCNY 紐約幼獅青少年管弦樂團.
  • The orchestra’s own 2017 self-history by 藝術總監方秀蓉, 08, fills the institutional record: founded 1996, registered as a nonprofit with New York State in 1997 (HOLD: page intro says incorporated 501(c)(3) in 2002 — the 1997 state registration and 2002 federal status are different registrations, both from the orchestra’s own account); included in NYC’s Beacon Program 1998–2007; grant-supported from 1999 by the Queens Council on the Arts, NY State Council on the Arts, NYC Dept. of Cultural Affairs, Councilman Peter Koo’s allocations, and JP Morgan Chase, with sponsorship from TECO/New York Cultural Center and the Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission. The Holiday Concert has been a Queens holiday tradition since 1998; the orchestra staged eight Asia tours (1997, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2015), two US West Coast tours (1998, 2000) and a Europe tour (2006) — its own English blurb counts eleven summer tours total. Leadership per the memoir: 音樂總監及指揮鍾啟仁, faculty 林季靜、張若葳、張紀葳、黃東瀛; 藝術總監方秀蓉 (also 台灣會館理事長), 行政總監張俊生; rehearsals at Marie Curie Middle School (MS 158), Bayside, Sept–June.
  • The concert-run records show continuity, not one-offs: thirteen Annual Concerts at Lincoln Center 2004–2017 (6. Annual Concert at Lincoln Center, 2004–2017) and fourteen Holiday Concerts in New York 2002–2017 (7. Holiday Concert, 2002–2017). Later records extend both runs: the 2010 Winter Concert 歲末迎新音樂會 at Bayside 01/30 and Briarwood 01/31 (Briarwood) and the 2019 Holiday Concert (2019 — HOLD: work title says 12/15/2019, its Record date says 2019-12-17). The 師生才藝演奏會 student-and-faculty series also continued past the memoir’s account with a Flushing concert in March 2018 (03 — HOLD: work Record date 2018-03-29 vs the memoir’s 03/30/2018).
  • Community anchoring at the Taiwan Center: the orchestra’s 移民音樂會 at 台灣會館 is recorded by 方秀蓉 (03).
  • The 2017-18 season per the orchestra’s own memoir: three large concerts — Christmas concert 12/17/2017 at Cardozo High School (Queens), 台灣會館音樂會 05/19/2018, and the Annual Concert 06/09/2018 at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center; plus the new 師生才藝表演音樂會 (first held 04/15/2017 at 台灣會館, 24 faculty-and-student performers), continuing 03/30/2018. Rehearsal cadence confirmed: Saturdays 1–4pm at Marie Curie Middle School (MS 158), Bayside, September–June, by audition, ages 10–18 (08).
  • Leadership, cross-referenced from the Who’s Who and musician records: Patsy Fang Chen (方秀蓉) — Artistic Director 1998–present (also author of the orchestra’s 2017 self-history and 台灣會館理事長); Chi-Jen Christopher Chung (鍾啓仁) — String Coach (2006–), String Faculty (2007–2013), Conductor (2011–), Music Director and Conductor (2013–), per his Who’s Who table and corroborated by 04 and 06 — the 2017 memoir’s 音樂總監及指揮 title is consistent with his 2013– appointment, not a date conflict.
  • The concert records show the orchestra anchored in the Flushing/Bayside Taiwanese American community (Taiwan Center, Middle School 158) and feeding the next generation of the movement’s cultural life.
  • Distinct sibling ensemble: 紐約長島台美青少年樂團 (Formosa Youth Orchestra, Long Island) appears separately in the corpus — 感恩音樂會 at Port Jefferson 11/29/1997 (1997) and directory entry 55. Formosa Youth Orchestra 紐約長島台美青少年樂團. It is not the same organization as CYCNY; note for disambiguation.
