Role in the Community

  • Seattle Taiwan Center (西雅圖台灣會館), founding couple: In April 2003 Clara Chen and her husband 陳紹紀, together with 林正南 and 陳淳美, pooled funds to purchase the property that became the Seattle Taiwan Center; the transfer completed 2003-04-30. The ~5,000 sq-ft building near the UW campus was renovated over about a year (event hall, kitchen, meeting room, library, classrooms) and the first two floors leased to the Greater Seattle Taiwanese American Foundation for a symbolic $1/year rent; the renovated lower level is rented to students to offset the mortgage. Clara Chen, 陳淳美 and 李卓芬 are credited as the three Taiwanese women whose labor drove the renovation. Source: 30. 西雅圖台灣會館 (Our Journeys, 2014-09) (English account: ourjourneys30-eng). This matches the TAH press-kit line “Community — Seattle Taiwan Center — Main contributor.”
  • Christian student movement, Madison WI: 劉真真 and 陳紹紀 (with 鄭學禮) organized the first prayer/Bible-study summer retreat at Wisconsin Dells for Taiwanese students in Madison in the 1960s; the effort grew into the Midwest “基督徒夏令會” held for several years across Midwestern states. • 1987 世台會返鄉團, on the eve of risk: Her peer’s memoir of the World Association of Taiwanese Organizations (世台會) homecoming delegation records that 劉真真 was among the women (with 陳翠玉、羅淸芬、蔡明霞、吳秀惠) who resolved to return to Taiwan and publicly voice the overseas 台灣獨立 position past KMT travel restrictions — and that she left a written will (遺書) before the trip, “萬一發生意外,有個交代.” The same account records 陳翠玉 obtaining a visa via Singapore and dying at National Taiwan University Hospital as the delegation’s program ended: Our Journeys 210 (世台會返鄉 memoir, band A).
  • NATWA affiliation: Named as representing NATWA (North America Taiwanese Women’s Association) in the community statement accompanying the Pew-based Taiwanese American demographic study: Pew Research Center Taiwanese American statement.
  • Early movement ties via husband 陳紹紀 (Prof. Stephen Shau-tsi Chen): 周烒明’s memoir of the 1960s–1970s University-of-Wisconsin Taiwanese students’ nation-building movement records that 西雅圖的陳紹紀 was among the 21 signatories who backed the Formosan-nationalism alliance congress by letter (alongside 陳伯山、鄧仁守、鄭彩鶯、鄭自才、楊宗昌 and others) when they could not attend in person — evidence the couple’s movement organizing predates the 2003 Seattle Taiwan Center purchase by about three decades: 81. 早期威大台灣學生在台灣建國運動 (周烒明, 2014-12). 陳紹紀’s own encyclopedia record is [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/whos-who-2303-shau-tsi-chen|TAH #2303 Prof. Stephen Shau-tsi Chen 陳紹紀教授]], held on his page; his own My Stories contributions include the table-tennis memoir [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/mystories108|My Stories #108 (2014-10)]] and the 劉清風 (first Taiwanese American MD) piece [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/my-stories-774|My Stories #774 (2020-12)]].
