He has lived in the U.S. since January 1990 and has been with FAPA since; his University of Amsterdam thesis was on the 1981 Dutch–Taiwanese submarine deal, which drew him into Taiwan affairs. Called a “Taiwan Sons-in-Law” alongside Gerrit van der Wees, in 2010 (age ~52) the two lectured at campuses across Taiwan to urge youth political participation ahead of the presidential election (Sacramento event feature, 2010; same interview: A Conversation with the Taiwan Sons-in-Law). HOLD: conflict on start year — the encyclopedia table says FAPA 執行長 from 2000 and 楊遠薰 says “since 1989”, while Blaauw himself says he has lived in the U.S. and worked at FAPA since January 1990.
