Role in the Community

  • 1969 — Co-founded the Pittsburgh Taiwanese Association with 羅福全 (Fu-Chen Lo), Edward Huang (黃東昇), and Chiung-hui Ko (柯炯輝) as young families looking after Taiwanese students in Pittsburgh. 羅福全’s house on Penn Avenue — until he left for a UN post in early 1973 — served as the association’s operating hub, even hosting student weddings; the group later borrowed university, church, and park venues for Mid-Autumn welcome parties, Lunar New Year dinners, dumpling parties, table-tennis and bridge tournaments, autumn foliage trips, softball games, and life symposia, plus lectures by visiting figures from Taiwan including 黃信介, 呂秀蓮, 李喬, 楊青矗, 黃春明, and 高俊明. After the 美麗島事件 (1979-12-10) the association held a packed symposium at the University of Pittsburgh’s Lawrence Hall on 12-15; 18 months later, when 陳文成 — affiliated with Carnegie Mellon — was found dead at his alma mater NTU after a 警總 interview in which police played his symposium remarks, the association joined the demonstrations in Pittsburgh’s Oakland campus district. See Our Journeys 292 — Pittsburgh Taiwanese Association (EN) and Our Journeys 292 (中文原稿).
  • Long-time East Coast resident, active in the Taiwanese American Conference – East Coast (TAC-EC), held annually since 1970.
  • After retiring to the San Francisco Bay area in 2013, pushed TAC-WC to establish a standing Board like TAC-EC’s; following the joint TAC-WC/NATPA 2016 Bay Area conference (500 participants), he, Steve Lin (林俊提) and Ed Huang convened regional leaders at the Taiwan Night to create the TAC-WC Board and served as its appointed advisor. • Listed under Illinois in the first 全美台灣同鄉通訊錄 (TAA national directory), compiled by 陳希寬 — an early documented base of his national-network activity. See Our Journeys 58 — 第一本全美台灣同鄉通訊錄.
  • Served as advisor (顧問) to the host committee of the TAC-WC (美西台灣同鄉夏令會) summer conference, personally recruiting attendees — one memoirist (李彥禎, writing 2016-08) recalls being enlisted aboard a cruise taken shortly after the January 2016 Taiwan presidential election (“他是這次主辦單位的顧問,責任非常重大”) and bringing 20 people from Laguna Woods Village; the same record notes him as “出力又出錢” alongside general convenor Edward Huang (黃東昇). • Oral history on record: 2023-08.
  • 2018-07 — Signed the open letter 「抗議 南加州台大校友會邀管中閔來年會做專題演講」 as one of ~170 台大校友 (listed as 柯耀宗(化工), matching his NTU 化工 1962 degree; wife 郭好美(農化) also a signer), protesting the UCLA-area NTU alumni association’s invitation to controversial president-candidate 管中閔 — letter archived at TJJ 報導, 2018-07-20.
  • Co-author of the collective autobiography volume
