  • The family lived in 型厝寮, 東石, 嘉義. After the war, 張清祺 (a 台南高等工業學校 — predecessor of 成功大學 — graduate) was put in charge of taking over 嘉義工學校 and became its principal.
  • He joined the KMT and served as 嘉義縣建設局局長; he briefly moved to run for 嘉義縣長 but withdrew when the KMT nominated 林金生. He was later transferred to 台灣省政府建設廳第六科科長 at 中興新村 — which is why the first five of the eight Chang children attended elementary school in 嘉義 and the last three at 中興新村國小.
  • The family carried political trauma: seventh uncle 張守仁 was arrested in the 洪養 case (1952-05) and executed (1953-01); only after arriving in the US did the children learn it was a White Terror political case for proximity to socialism.
