Role in the Community

Dr. Yu has been a central institution-builder in the Greater Washington DC Taiwanese American community. He served as president of the North American Taiwanese Medical Association (NATMA) Washington D.C. Chapter and of the Taiwanese American Senior Society (TASS) of Greater Washington DC. In his 2014 community essay 「介紹一個成功的社團—大華府台美人長樂會(TASS)」 he documented TASS’s history as a model club. Chen Huaichong’s (陳淮崇) 2008 memoir on the birth of the Washington DC and Baltimore Taiwanese American Association (TAA) lists him among the chapter’s presidents in 1986–1987, alongside Shien S. Perng 彭賢森 and Edward H. Lee 李賢淇. He remained publicly active in movement causes into 2018, when he appears among the named NTU alumni signatories of the TJJ open letter protesting the 管中閔 keynote invitation; that letter lists him under 牙醫 (NTU dentistry). HOLD: conflict — the 2018 letter’s 牙醫 listing vs the TAH #1646 profile (NTU B.S., Harvard M.S., UAB 1979 Ph.D., otolaryngology), which names no dentistry degree. Not merged.
