Role in the Community

  • The memoir “台美醫師的歷史” (Our Journeys) places 劉清風 as the cautionary pioneer of the whole pre-war generation: even he, having graduated from an American medical school in 1926, could not obtain U.S. residence under the era’s Chinese-exclusion/Japanese-exclusion immigration regime — Taiwanese were classified only as Japanese or Chinese — and was forced to take a teaching post at 復旦大學 in Shanghai instead (source: Our Journeys 285, 台美醫師歷史). The essay uses him to show that no Taiwanese-American physicians could exist before WWII.
  • Family memory recorded in the same memoir series: his sister 劉聰慧醫師 (b. 1917, 台北帝大醫學博士 1945, 杜聰明’s snake-venom lab) trained in the U.S. 1947–49, later Okinawa and Japan, and emigrated to Seattle from 1980; their niece 劉姃姃 (Seifu Ryu’s eldest daughter) supplied the 1974 résumé behind that account (source: Our Journeys 270).
