Community Leadership (absorbed from TAH Who’s Who)
A physicist by training (NTNU 1964, UMass Ph.D. 1970) who moved from industrial research (Syva, Baxter) to full-time technology consulting in 1992, Lee devoted much of his career to institution-building in the Taiwanese American community: president of the TAA Northwest Chapter, the Seattle Taiwanese Foundation, the Taiwanese Alliance for Interculture N. CA, the NATPA Southern California Chapter, and finally the Taiwanese American Foundation |台美基金會. As Preparatory Chairman he launched the first Taiwanese American Heritage Week celebration in Los Angeles.
The association he served is itself documented in the vault: NATPA 北美洲台灣人教授協會 (總會), its 南加州分會 chapter work page, and NATPA 簡史.
According to 廖述宗’s NATPA history 12), Lee was elected one of NATPA’s regional directors for the Western region (西區) at the association’s 1981 annual meeting. The founding history of 台灣協志會 — the association whose Bay Area chapter (灣區協志會) he later presided over — is recorded in the vault at 09) (English translation: Taiwanese Alliance for Interculture — Establishment and Major Events).
Two memoir records add first-person texture to his service. Wu Mu-sheng’s report on the World Taiwanese Association (世台會) annual meetings 04) recalls meeting Lee at the association’s third annual meeting — July 2–5, dated early 1976 (七六年初) in Wu’s account, held at Pepperdine University overlooking the Pacific at Malibu — after years of correspondence without ever meeting in person; the same report describes a KMT-bussed disruption attempt at that meeting. And 紀哲嘉’s history of 台灣協志會 37. 台灣協志會成立與大事記 records that when NATPA, the 全美同鄉會, 台灣文化社 and 台灣協志會 co-hosted the 228 Incident 40th-anniversary academic symposium (1987), Lee and 李啓和 took charge of renting and arranging the venue — the paper sessions were held February 28 at the Syntek Hall Center in Palo Alto, with 陳芳明 as convenor and scholars including 彭明敏, 林宗義, 張旭成 and 陳芳明 presenting (English translation at Taiwanese Alliance for Interculture — Establishment and Major Events).
His editorial work for the scholarly association — Editor-in-Chief of the SCAL Tribune, NATPA Tribune, and Taiwan Inquiry 探討台灣 — is documented in the TAH magazine corpus: [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/916-taiwan-inquiry-e6-8e-a2-e8-a8-8e-e5-8f-b0-e7-81-a3-natpa-200604magazines-e9-||TAH #916, Taiwan Inquiry / NATPA (2006/04)]] and [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/927-2015-natpa-scal-30th-pearl-anniversary-natpa-scal-201512magazines-e9-9b-9c-e||TAH #927, NATPA SCAL 30th Pearl Anniversary (2015/12)]]; the association’s archival record appears at |NATPA Record TA history. His personal profile was recorded twice in the TAH encyclopedia, [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/73-dr-wylie-i-lee||TAH #73 (published 2018-09-04, the year of his death)]] and [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/whos-who-765-wylie-i-lee||TAH #765]].
