Role in the Community

  • First author to win three Asian American Literary Awards: Waylaid (Kaya Press, 2002) and This Is a Bust (2007) each won the Members’ Choice Award, and Snakes Can’t Run (Minotaur Books, 2010) also won. Waylaid was adapted into the film The Motel by Michael Kang.
  • Robert Chow series — Chinese-American NYPD detective novels set in 1976 New York (Snakes Can’t Run, One Red Bastard, 2012) — grew from his research into Chinese-American history in 1976; see 2012 West Coast tour chat (recorded by Ho Chie Tsai at Eastwind Books, Berkeley).
  • Turned to Taiwan as subject matter: Ghost Month (Soho Crime, 2014), a Taipei-set mystery whose protagonist Jing-nan works at Shilin Night Market, and the Taiwan-based novel Incensed (2016 tour) — 2014 interview with Anna Wu, 2016 Incensed tour record. In the interview he discusses his family (father’s family in Taiwan since shortly after the fall of the Ming Dynasty in the 1600s; mother a waishengren from Northern China who came to favor Taiwanese independence) and says Taiwan’s low international profile is a core motivation for his writing.

HOLD: conflict between the two TAH records’ Chinese names — 林艾德 (this page’s name_zh) vs 林景南 (#2081); never auto-merged.
  • 2026-09-22 re-grep (林艾德 / Ed Lin / 林景南): same hit set (TAH #120, #2081, index, and the three taiwaneseamerican-org tour/interview records already linked) — nothing new absorbable.
  • Ghost Month (2014) tour record extended: additional community event records now wikilinked — Berkeley presentation Ghost Month 柏克羅書訊, and two New York events, NY night-market event and NY Ghost Month discussion. Confirms the 2014 Ghost Month tour spanned both Berkeley and New York Taiwanese American community venues.
