Role in the Community
Community memoirs in the corpus describe 簡忠松 as a civil engineer who ran his own engineering consulting firm (自擁一工程顧問公司) and served as president of the Twin Cities (雙城) Taiwanese hometown association in Minnesota. His support of the Taiwan independence movement drew KMT retaliation for decades: he was blacklisted from returning to Taiwan — several years before the memoir was written even a family funeral trip was denied — and his wife 吳明珠 was likewise barred (連座), unable to return even for her own mother’s funeral until a single-entry permit was granted in the memoir’s year (Our Journeys 106). In Houston, when the Taiwanese Heritage Society of Houston converted its purchased building into the Taiwanese Cultural Center (fundraising committee formed August 1991), 簡忠松 donated the filling-in of the property’s swimming pool (游泳池填平:簡忠松) (Our Journeys 233, English). He also contributed life writing to the community record, including the essay 愛河 ( 簡忠松, 05), and his autobiography collection 宜中耆老憶往述今–簡忠松專輯 was published in February 2022 ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/publications-1364|TAH #1364]]). His life-writing thread in the TAH catalog runs earlier: the essays 循道上岸 (475. 循道上岸, 1997) and 逆道 (476. 逆道, 1998), plus his Who’s Who encyclopedia entry of 2015/02 (268. J. S. Chien 簡忠松, 2015-02).
His TAH catalog life-writing thread is broader than the two essays above: 簡勇 台語文自賞集 (1995-07, 474), 台語文 工程話 故人情 with 胡民祥 (1997-07, 477), 颱 with 胡民祥 (2000, 478), 黑珍珠 (1999, 199), 回頭來時路 (2011, 248), and 順生善後—哀慟歷程 (480); the English edition of 愛河 is preserved at My Stories 121 (EN). The engineering-title essays (工程話, 颱) show his engineer’s voice written into the Taiwanese-language literature record.
The Austin Taiwanese Association memoir adds biographical and blacklist detail: **Jong-Song Chien (簡忠松), born in Yilan (宜蘭) in 1944, came to the United States in 1969 and earned his master’s degree in engineering at Cincinnati. He was put on the KMT blacklist in 1970 for initiating the Taiwanese Association in Cleveland, Ohio, and later came to Austin to retire in the 2000s, listed alongside other blacklisted returnees there such as 陳希寬 and 張郁彬 (Our Journey 343). HOLD: the blacklist attribution here (initiating the Cleveland association) is stated alongside — not against — the independence-movement rationale recorded in Our Journeys 106; the two accounts are not in conflict on dates (both place the blacklisting in the early 1970s). His birth year 1944 is consistent with the NTU 1966 graduation date in the Education table.
