Role in the Community

  • Represented Taiwan (not the US) at the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei and won the gold medal in Men’s Singles tennis — a landmark moment for Taiwanese visibility on the world stage. In his own words, seeing “so many Taiwan flags in the crowd” while Taiwan competes internationally only as “Chinese Taipei” was “truly inspiring” (Advantage, Team Taiwan — TaiwaneseAmerican.org interview, 2017-09-20, value band A).
  • Self-described strong Taiwanese identity: “I’ve always wanted to help Taiwan in any way I could and using tennis was a great way.” Path: started tennis at 5, serious from ~10, University of Michigan tennis scholarship (4 years), brief oil-industry job in Torrance after graduation, then turned professional (~6 years pro as of the 2017 interview).
  • Mentioned in Taiwanese community-press coverage of the 2024 民視異言堂 program “網球戰士莊吉生” (2024-01-28), archived in the Taiwan Justice corpus (台灣新聞彙編; also carried in 台灣新聞彙編 2024-04-12 and 台灣新聞彙編 2024-04-25).
  • Own Who’s Who encyclopedia record preserved in the corpus: [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/whos-who-1936-jason-jung|TAH #1936, 莊吉生, 2017-11-06]] (bibliographic record; full text stays in the vault).
