Role in the Community

  • Founding pioneer of the Plains Region Formosan Autumn Convention (平原區台灣人秋令會): in 1983, then in Manhattan, Kansas, he and fellow 同鄉 范良正, 刁明華, and 黃金來 first conceived the convention; the idea was pressed forward by 徐福棟’s active proposal and prepared/convened by 林啓東, and the convention was founded in 1985 at Rock Spring (a 4-H Club campsite near Manhattan, Kansas), covering the central-plains states (Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma). The first annual meeting’s theme, set by 林啓東, was 台灣人「大家來，來做堆」, deliberately separating the Taiwanese from the Chinese; a later convention was hosted with the Kansas City 同鄉會.
