Role in the Community

From our own memoir corpus (TAH “Our Journeys” records), John Hsieh 謝鎮寬 was a central figure in Bay Area and Texas Taiwanese American organizing:

  • TAFNC Bay Area 聯合會 (San Francisco chapter federation): Vice president and 東南灣同鄉會 president. In the federation’s 10-vote board era he was counted among the pro-KMT bloc (宋瑞珍、謝鎮寬、吳新一 — “三人四張票”), alongside 吳新一 and 宋瑞珍; the bloc’s failed move to strip the president/vice-president votes led to the short-lived 台灣鄉情關懷會 split and the 中半島同鄉會 walking out until 1998 (Our Journeys 38).
  • 1994 internal-dispute detail (林健次 memoir): the federation’s ten board votes were 會長林健次, vice-presidents 張祿生 and 謝鎮寬, plus 東南灣同鄉會 (謝鎮寬 — hence his double vote), 東灣 (傅憲亮), 南灣 (吳新一), 中半島 (宋瑞珍), 舊金山 (葉敏忠), Fresno (劉清白), 協志會 (石清正). The pro-KMT three proposed cutting 協志會/舊金山/Fresno and removing the president/vice-president votes to reach a majority; after the move failed they co-organized a political demo at the Chinese consulate over the 千島湖事件 — which they then cited against the federation hosting political events (Our Journeys 142 — 1994年北加州台灣同鄉會聯合會的内部爭執 (林健次)).
  • First Taiwan Culture Festival (1993-06-27, Palo Alto): Convener/organizer. He upgraded the decade-old Taiwanese-style Mid-Autumn Garden Party into a culture exhibition introducing Taiwanese culture (first feature: Mazu) to the American public; the festival later grew past 6,000 attendees as TAFNC’s largest event (Our Journeys 38 (EN)).
  • Texas: Served as 會長 of the TX-N chapter, leading 2020 Census “TAIWAN” advocacy visits to the offices of Congressmen Marc Veasey, Ron Wright, and Van Taylor (Our Journeys 370).

HOLD: corpus places him both in Bay Area 聯合會 leadership (1990s) and as a Texas chapter 會長 (2020s); no source states relocation, so both stand unmerged.

2026-09-22 re-check: corpus grep returns Our Journeys 38/38(EN)/142/370, the #470 directory record, and the works index — all now linked.

Corpus re-grep (slice 09221100-23, 2026-09-23): same hit set (ourjourneys38, ourjourneys38-eng, ourjourneys142, our-journeys-370, own record [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/470-john-hsieh-e8-ac-9d-e9-8e-ae-e5-af-ac201506|TAH #470]], index). #470 body re-confirms the TX-N 會長 / 2020 Census advocacy detail already absorbed from Our Journeys 370. Nothing new absorbable — SKIP (verified-saturated).

Corpus re-grep (slice 09230600-11, 2026-09-24): identical hit set (ourjourneys38/38-eng/142, our-journeys-370, TAH #470, index). Verified saturated.
