Role in the Community
- Graduated Tainan First Girls’ High School (台南女中) before entering NTU Chemistry (1953–1957). Her first-hand recollections are preserved in the oral-history corpus article 從台北帝大到台灣大學──「去日本化」與「中國化」下的台大 (楊起東, 2018-10-20): she recalls a chemistry class of about 30 students, half male, with only about five Taiwanese women and five or six Taiwanese men, and mostly Taiwanese professors; the Kuomintang-era mandate to teach in Beijing Mandarin (普通話) caused many professors real difficulty expressing themselves.
- In the same memoir she describes post-war ethnic tension from a southern Taiwanese vantage: mainlanders (外省人) had less local power in the south so relations were comparatively easy, but a visit to the home of a classmate whose father was a low-ranked soldier — where “many enlisted men were employed to do household chores, ordered around at will” — made clear the privileges of “high-ranked mainlanders,” a feeling she later met again in Taipei. She recalls that politics at home was discussed with anger but silenced under martial law (“敢怒而不敢言”), that ministry-level posts went to ineffective mainland appointees while the substantive work was done by Taiwanese deputy ministers, and that — like her husband — she only improved her Taiwanese after emigrating to the US.
