Counted among the physician-artists of the Taiwanese American community: 林衡哲’s community-history essay Our Journeys 291 records that 許明彥 was both a physician and a painter — 「許明彥也是醫師畫家，可惜病魔纏身，無法發揮潛能」 — placing him alongside 施哲三, 陳家榮, 鄭瑞雄, and 吳永吉.
蔡烈輝’s biography 「攜手走過來的路」 蔡烈輝 (Biography) supplies the community biography behind that label: born 1940 in 鳳山, son of village physician 許寸金 (an 嘉義北港 man who wrote 慕陶小集) and 王朱鶯 of the 西螺 望族, who served as a 縣議員; four elder brothers (澤聰, 斌碩, 文宏, 希哲) and a sister 雲娥. Brother 斌碩, after 師大音樂系, became a pastor.
The biography confirms the painter side from the inside: his art club at 高雄醫學院 was formed under 劉啟祥 professor, he submitted paintings that ran in the school journal 「南杏」, and he drew likenesses of instructors on the classroom blackboard; after half a century he took up the brush again in retirement, working in his own studio in “鮮艷明亮的色彩.” His sister 雲娥 still holds several of his early watercolours.
Athletic record: 高雄中學 football team regular and 高雄醫學院 centre-forward — 林衡哲’s physician-artists line is not the whole of him.
