Role in the Community
Prof. Lung-Chi Chen (陳隆志, b. 1935, Tainan) was a central legal voice of the overseas Taiwanese independence movement and later a state-building theorist.
- Formosan League for Self-Determination (全美台灣獨立聯盟): recruited at Yale during the 1960s “Freedom March” (自由長征) campus tours that integrated Taiwanese student organizations; later served as executive-committee vice chairman (foreign affairs) under chairman 蔡同榮, alongside 鄭自才 (secretary) and 羅福全 (propaganda) — see 81. 早期威大台灣學生在台灣建國運動所扮演的角色.
- Author: 《臺灣的獨立與建國》 published in 1971, the year the ROC was expelled from the UN (10.25), per the Bay Area chronology — see 357. 舊金山灣區臺灣人的社團活動與家國意識之形成.
- Movement speaker: travelled repeatedly to the US East Coast to lecture on Taiwanese freedom and independence (with 史明, 陳唐山, 蔡同榮 et al.); North Carolina audiences often met in private living rooms for fear of KMT informants — see 381. 我的青春在北卡:北卡台灣同鄉會50年回顧.
- 1992: co-delivered speeches (with 李亨熙 and others) at the Midwest Taiwanese Summer Conference — see 123. 明州台美人百年大事.
- Chairman, Taiwan New Century Foundation (台灣新世紀社造協會), per his TAH profile.
- 1969-07: at the Formosan League for Self-Determination USA convention in Gary, Indiana, 蔡同榮 was elected chairman, 張燦鋈 first vice chairman and 陳隆志 second vice chairman — see Our Journeys 234. HOLD: this 1969 ticket (2nd副主席) vs the later-titled「執委會副主任委員(外交)」role under chairman 蔡同榮 recorded above — never auto-merged.
- Recruiter for the movement: 蔡同榮 once had 李隆吉 bring 陳隆志 to Gardena to lobby 劉天良 to join 台獨聯盟 (Our Journeys 240).
- Williamsport, Little League World Series: 陳隆志 (then a Yale PhD) served as spokesperson for the ~20-member 台獨聯盟 contingent that unfurled the “Team of Taiwan/台灣隊加油” banner, with 賴文雄 and 鄭自才 holding the banner (Our Journeys 62).
- Movement lecture circuit: 蔡同榮、陳隆志、彭明敏、張燦鍙、莊文樺 etc. spoke repeatedly in Houston; at the large 民眾大會 there KMT agents singled out 彭明敏’s session (Our Journeys 317). In New York, a young 周烒明-generation narrator records his political awakening after hearing 陳隆志 and four other doctors speak at a 同鄉會 meeting (Our Journeys 70).
- 1995: speaker (politics track, 「新台灣,新希望」) at the 17th Midwest Taiwanese Summer Conference, Spartanburg SC (Our Journeys 245).
- 「大海洋」論述: in a founding message for 台僑月刊 he urged Taiwanese on the island and in the US to embody a “大海洋” spirit and press the US government for Taiwanese independence and UN participation (Our Journeys 209).
- Book record: 《台灣的獨立與建國》(1971/1, Politics) is held as a bibliographic record in the TAH corpus — [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/727-e5-8f-b0-e7-81-a3-e7-9a-84-e7-8d-a8-e7-ab-8b-e8-88-87-e5-bb-ba-e5-9c-8b-e9-9|TAH #727]] — corroborating the 1971 dating above.
- Oral history: TAH video interview 「國際法學家 陳隆志專訪」 ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/videos64|TAH #64]]) — also circulated via the news-observation archive (news observation: 國際法學家陳隆志專訪).
- Student of 彭明敏: corpus chronology identifies him as 「彭明敏的學生陳隆志,著有《台灣的獨立與建國》一書」 who joined 全美台獨聯盟 after the 1966 founding (從二戰後全球去殖民化到台灣國家正常化(下)).
- 1970-04 (424刺蔣案 aftermath): per 王泰’s memoir, after the Plaza Hotel protest and shooting attempt, 陳隆志 appeared on national US television as the movement’s legal voice, 「侃侃而談」 the Taiwan problem for five or six minutes — the event that 「將台灣所遭遇的問題在全美國乃至於全世界前攤了開來」 (化作千風:台獨先鋒王泰).
- 1999-04: author of 「公民投票與台灣前途」 (Politics), held as TAH corpus record #1093 ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/publications1093|TAH #1093]]) — an early referendum-advocacy text predating the constitutional referendum era.
- 2016-12-27 (民報): in his late-career international-law capacity he argued 「ROC形同『混亂民國』,連美國都正名直呼台灣」 — the ROC-as-”chaotic republic” framing that circulated widely in the normalization debate (news observation: 民報 2016-12-27) — later echoed in his 2021 「大工事」 program above.
- 2021: as 台灣新世紀文教基金會 董事長, set out the 「大工事」 of state normalization — 制憲正名(國家正名憲法化), UN membership under the name Taiwan, and cultivating the national will of a normalized people — in a 陳茂雄 column on the 制憲 debate (民進黨制憲,省省吧!/陳茂雄).
