His 2017 autobiography is held as a band-A community-history record in the TAH story corpus: 自傳 (written with Kate Jaimet). The foreword, by his Temple University research collaborator, records that after Temple failed to patent their initial discovery of DOPA-ester (dihydroxyphenylalanine) compounds promoting skin pigmentation, Yu taught himself patent drafting and thereafter drafted all of their applications himself.

From the collaborator’s foreword in the 自傳 record (1218): after the dermatology department hosting their joint research was abolished, Yu taught himself business operations to keep the research funded — leading to Neostrata/TriStrata; the company distinguished itself by scientifically testing products against comparators and publishing results for open scrutiny. The foreword also records that he grew up severely nutritionally deprived, which the author ties to his lifelong commitment to finding preventatives and cures, and quotes his motto: “We do not need to have good luck. We do need to have the absence of bad luck.”
