Role in the Community

  • 北加州台美同鄉聯合會 era（1990s） — In the federation memoir Our Journeys 142, 宋瑞珍 is recorded as the 中半島同鄉會 representative holding one of the ten board votes. He, 謝鎮寬 (vice-chair + 東南灣同鄉會, two votes) and 吳新一 (南灣同鄉會) formed the pro-KMT bloc holding four of the ten votes — one short of a majority. To win a majority they proposed stripping the votes of 協志會、舊金山同鄉會 and Fresno同鄉會 and of the federation chair/vice-chairs, restricting voting rights to homeward-association chairs only (a move the federation chair saw as splitting the body); after failing to steer the federation they helped form the short-lived, nominal 「台灣鄉情關懷會」. The 中半島同鄉會 withdrew from the federation and only rejoined in 1998 under federation president 林彩鳳. The memoir also notes the bloc opposed the federation hosting political activities while itself (with its three associations) organizing a protest at the ROC consulate over the 千島湖 incident — but not protesting the KMT government at its San Francisco office.
