Role in the Community

Chuang appears in the Band-A oral history 152. 柏克萊加大的『台灣寮』(陳仲欽, 2015-07), which adds first-hand community detail:

  • From Hsinchu, NTNU (師大) botany department; schoolmate memory: pitcher on the Hsinchu Middle School (新竹中學) baseball team; described by the author as quiet and diligent (木訥勤奮), and a distant relative (遠親) of the author.
  • Around 1963 he was among the Taiwanese graduate students living at the Berkeley “Taiwan House” (台灣寮) at 2452 Bancroft Way, south of Sather Gate — he had already married and left his wife and child in Taiwan; he moved out about a year later when his wife 惠美 joined him in the US.
  • Before going abroad he worked at the Institute of Botany, Academia Sinica (consistent with the 1959–1962 employment record). The two families stayed in close touch in the US: his wife’s elder sister was the elder sister of the author’s paternal uncle’s wife.
  • A plant-taxonomy authority (植物分類學的權威) at Central Illinois State University.
  • Death: he felt chest tightness suddenly during a ping-pong game; diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer; transferred to San Francisco care but too late — died May 1994, aged 62 (consistent with the 1932–1994 era field). Buried in a hillside cemetery in El Cerrito, California near Berkeley; the flush grave marker faces the Pacific toward Taiwan, with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge. The author visited the grave in 1998.

Also recorded in TAH’s own encyclopedia entry: 2153. Prof. Tsan-Iang Chuang 莊燦陽教授.
