Role in the Community

  • A representative figure of the Presbyterian base of the North American Taiwanese movement, per Rev. 張瑞雄’s church memoir: classmate of 黃彰輝牧师; after the 228 Incident (1947) he went to Hong Kong and warned 黃彰輝 that 林茂生 had been killed and he should not return to Taiwan (黃 went anyway). Through the help of his brother 蔡愛義, a teacher in Hong Kong, he emigrated to Seattle, served as pastor of the local Japanese Congregational Church, and then helped found the local Taiwanese Church (台灣教會) and Taiwanese association (同鄉會). His brother 蔡愛仁 married a daughter of 高再得 — elder sister of 高俊明 — and that family also later settled in Seattle (何義麟《美國舊金山灣區台灣基督教會史料簡介》, TAH our-journeys 350).
  • An eyewitness source for early North American Taiwanese history: 黃武東’s memoir 「台灣人在北美洲」 records that, lacking any books on early Taiwanese in North America, the author obtained irreplaceable reminiscences from pen-friends 劉青藜博士 (San Francisco) and 蔡愛智牧師 (Seattle); the memoir also notes 蔡愛智 was the fourth son of the late Dr. 蔡得一, a prominent Tainan family, and after studying theology at Doshisha University in Kyoto came to the US and the University of Chicago Divinity School, then became pastor of the Seattle Japanese Congregational Church (黃武東《台灣人在北美洲》, TAH ourjourneys 266).
