Role in the Community

  • Editor of TAF’s OUR VOICE. The Taiwanese American Foundation’s own history records that TAF published a quarterly English newspaper for the T.A. community, OUR VOICE, edited by Dr. Edward Gibeing ChenHuang (陳黃義敏), then a professor of communication at DePauw University, an effort that lasted two years ( History of Taiwanese American Foundation).
  • Third pastor of the Formosan Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles (1988–1991). The church’s 50th-anniversary memoir lists his tenure among the six successive pastors and credits him with superior English ability that gave the church good communication with the presbytery (中會) and General Assembly (大會), plus diligent training of church workers (邱惠美、李永碩). His pastorate coincided with the church’s late-1980s growth to ~250 members and the 1988 South Bay branch that seeded a new 長老教會.
  • Founding generation of the North American Taiwanese Professors Association (北美洲台灣人教授協會). He was one of the sixteen professors at the first organizing meeting, 1980-02-16, at the University of Chicago International House, and served as secretary cum treasurer (秘書兼財務) under the first elected president (廖述宗).
