Identity Snapshot

  • Type: Theological seminary
  • Geography: San Francisco, California
  • Core roles: theological education, research, ecclesial training

Role in the Community

  • The seminary (舊金山神學院) trained pioneers of Bay Area Taiwanese-language church formation. According to Rev. 張瑞雄’s history in [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/our-journeys-350|Our Journeys #350 美國舊金山灣區台灣基督教會史料簡介 (何義麟, 2019)]]: arriving from Tainan Theological College and Seminary in 1962, he entered San Francisco Theological Seminary in 1964 as an exchange student (introduced by Rev. 黃武東 under a Presbyterian Church arrangement after his Pacific Theological Seminary scholarship ran out), graduating in 1967 — then pastoring a Methodist Japanese church in Fresno before pioneering Taiwanese-immigrant evangelism in the Bay Area, which led to the 1975 founding of 舊金山灣區臺灣基督教會 (FUMC) and its later offshoots 東灣臺灣基督教會 and 迦南臺灣基督教會.
  • [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/our-journeys-357|Our Journeys #357 (何義麟, 2020)]] corroborates: SFTS-trained Rev. 張瑞雄 is described as the Bay Area Taiwanese church 開拓者, and the three North-California Taiwanese churches trace their origin to his ministry; their members also joined 同鄉會、聯合會、協志會.
  • From #357, the succession the seminary’s training made possible is precisely dated: 舊金山灣區臺灣基督教會 (FUMC, Formosan United Methodist Church of San Francisco Bay Area) was formally established 1975-08-10 as the first Taiwanese-language church under the Methodist Church in the Bay Area; after 1979 it split into north/south gatherings, 東灣臺灣基督教會 (EBFUMC) was founded in Walnut Creek in 1982, and the southern congregation bought its own church in 1983 and separated from the Methodist Church to become 迦南臺灣基督教會 (CTCC).
  • HOLD: conflict in [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/our-journeys-350|#350]] — the opening summary says 張瑞雄 graduated from 舊金山神學院 in 1967, while the detailed narrative says 「張牧師在1966年畢業後,大約有半年緩衝的時間」 and he took the Fresno Methodist post in 1967. Both dates appear in the same source; not auto-merged.
  • Also in the corpus: Dr. Albert S. Lai (賴信雄) completed his 1971 Doctor of Ministry dissertation here — Toward A Community of Hope.
  • Note: 舊金山太平洋神學院 (Pacific Theological Seminary, where 張瑞雄 first enrolled 1962) is a distinct institution from 舊金山神學院 in the source text.
