Role in the Community
Corpus records place Tina Chang at the founding of the North American Taiwanese human-rights movement: she was the first president of 北美洲台灣人權協會 (Formosan Association for Human Rights, FAHR), founded 1976, per her TAH encyclopedia record [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/64-tina-chang-e5-bc-b5-e4-b8-81-e8-98-ad-the-first-president-of-e5-8c-97-e7-be-8|TAH #64: The First President of 北美洲台灣人權協會 / 1976]]. Her own 2014 account of the association’s founding and state, 台灣人權協會的開始與現況, is preserved as [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys75-eng|TAH #75 (Formosan Association for Human Rights)]].
Blacklisted by the KMT, she was among the overseas Taiwanese who smuggled themselves back to Taiwan on altered passports during the 1988–89 返鄉潮, per the movement memoir [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys230|Our Journeys #230]]; her own first-person account of that return, 返鄉記 (03/2016), is held at [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys210|TAH #210: 返鄉記]]. A memorial tribute by 毛清芬, 為台灣無怨無悔的張丁蘭 (2015/09), is at [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/329-e7-82-ba-e5-8f-b0-e7-81-a3-e7-84-a1-e6-80-a8-e7-84-a1-e6-82-94-e7-9a-84-e5-b|TAH #329]]. HOLD: [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/whos-who-1762-tina-chang|TAH #1762 “Tina Chang 張瑞菊”]] shares the English name but is a different person (張瑞菊) — not merged into this page.
Beyond the human-rights movement, she served the community in a social-work capacity: she was one of the 顧問 (advisors) of the 北美台灣婦女會 (NATWA) “婦女信箱” advice column in the 台灣公論報 — listed as 「張丁蘭:社工碩士,紐約州心理衛生部工作十二年」 — per the column’s 2001 千禧年專刊 collected in [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys79|TAH #79: 婦女信箱 (2014/12)]]. The 2014 Chinese edition of her FAHR founding account is also preserved as [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys75|TAH #75 (ZH): 台灣人權協會的開始與現況 / 張丁蘭 / 2014/12]].
She also contributed personal memoir to the corpus: an autobiography 張丁蘭的故事 written 2000-11 ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/253-e5-bc-b5-e4-b8-81-e8-98-ad-e7-9a-84-e6-95-85-e4-ba-8b-e5-bc-b5-e4-b8-81-e8-9|TAH #253: 張丁蘭的故事]]) and the essay 力爭上游 / Striving up in the World ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/mystories37-eng|TAH #37]]; Chinese edition at [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/mystories37|TAH #37 (ZH): 力爭上游 / 張丁蘭]]). The community commemorated her after her passing in 2015-09 with the tribute 張丁蘭女士生命的禮讚 ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/photo-albums-activities-97|TAH #97: In memory of Mrs. Tina Chang]]). See also her second encyclopedia entry [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/94-tina-chang-e5-bc-b5-e4-b8-81-e8-98-ad|TAH #94]].
Movement-activity record outside FAHR: 陳宏達’s account of the 故王康陸秘書長告別式及骨灰佈撒行程 (published 2018/06) records her — addressed as 「丁蘭女士」/「丁蘭姐」 — among the speakers at the memorial gathering at 高雄勞工公園 (「丁蘭女士,相繼上台演説,生動感人,頗受好評」), and later carrying a bag of ashes to scatter on the coastal rocks at her native 宜蘭 during the ash-scattering tour, per [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys334|TAH #334: 故王康陸秘書長告別式及骨灰佈撒行程記事 / 陳宏達 / 2018/06]]. HOLD: the account does not state whose ashes she carried at 宜蘭; not asserted to be her husband 張燦鍙’s.
