Wen-Hui Tsai (蔡玟慧律師)
Story
蔡玟慧 is a Southern California lawyer and 僑務諮詢委員 whose name became known far beyond the courtroom through the 紀欣然 case. In July 2014, 紀欣然, a Chinese graduate student at USC, was killed on her way home; police arrested four suspects, and families thousands of miles away in 新疆 faced a US criminal process they could not navigate. 蔡玟慧 took the family’s side for free and stayed with them through five years of litigation until the killers were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life. The gratitude of 紀欣然’s parents outlasted the trial: with community donations left over, and on the suggestion of 陳景星 — former chairman of the South Coast Chinese Cultural Association — the family established the 蔡玟慧律師傑出公益奉獻獎學金, first awarded in March 2025, so that the lawyer’s unpaid fight for justice would keep rippling through young people who serve their own communities.
