The Austin Taiwanese Association (ATA) is a regional chapter of the Taiwanese Association of America (TAA, 全美台灣同鄉會), the national umbrella organization for Taiwanese American community associations in the United States. The chapter serves the Taiwanese American community in the Austin, Texas area and is listed under the TAA Southern (美南) regional division.
Role in the Community
- The chapter’s own history is held in the TAH story corpus: Austin Taiwanese Association 奧斯汀台灣同鄉會 (德州) (record published 2014-10-12).
- Community publication: Newsletter of Austin Taiwanese Association (2016).
- Material culture: 31. T-Shirt of Austin Taiwanese Association (2017 artifact).
- Austin’s wider Taiwanese civic ecosystem also includes TAP 台美菁英協會奧斯丁(德州)分會 and 奧斯丁台灣商會, each documented as separate records in the corpus ( TAP, 2014; Austin Chapter of Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce, 2016).
- Repression context at founding: immediately after the chapter’s establishment, R.O.C. Consul General Mr. Chu (Houston/TX) sent a warning letter to the founding president Dr. Mu-Sheng Wu of TAA/Austin (1970-06-04) — the KMT-state surveillance side of the chapter’s origin, corroborating Wu’s founding memoir: 1970.
- Second-generation activities: the Austin second-generation softball team is documented as its own community record: 109. 奧斯汀壘球隊 (第二代) Softball Team (second generation) — Austin, Texas.
- The founding account also stands inside Wu’s broader national memoir on the TAA’s origins, which names the UT Austin chapter (with Ohio State) as one of the two typical campus associations of the 1970 wave and details the KMT “小組” apparatus in Austin (cell leader 羅大禎 under district chief 張廣材) that the founding students organized against: 2014.
- Founding memoir: Mu-Sheng Wu’s “45. Austin台灣同鄕會之成立” records the chapter’s birth from UT Austin Taiwanese graduate students who gathered against KMT campus surveillance; the corpus calls UT Austin’s association (c. 1970, when Austin had under 200,000 people) one of the two most typical campus associations of that wave alongside Ohio State: Mu-Sheng Wu.
- Second-generation record: Pearl Wu 楊碧珠’s memoir of 1980s–90s second-generation Taiwanese Americans in Austin documents community upbringing around the chapter: Pearl Wu.
- Adjacent organizing (distinct body, not merged): Pearl Wu — later FAPA Texas-Central chapter president — records FAPA TX-C’s 2018-10-28 reactivation meeting in Austin (18 members reinstated, Wu elected president) and the push for Congressman John Carter to co-sponsor HCR 124: Pearl Wu.
- Further documented Austin Taiwanese civic bodies (separate corpus records, not merged with the chapter): NATEA 北美台灣工程師協會奧斯汀分會, Austin Taiwanese School (Texas) 德州奧斯汀台語學校, Austin Taiwanese Presbyterian Church 奧斯汀台灣基督長老教會, Austin Hakka Association 德州奧斯汀客家會, and the Austin women’s association fielding “Team Taiwan” at the Race for Cure (2016): 德州奧斯汀婦女會組 Team Taiwan 參加 Race for Cure.
