The NYU Taiwanese American Student Society (TASS) is a student organization at New York University founded in 2002. According to its website, TASS was established “with the goal and intention of creating a welcoming and unified family that could come together to learn and appreciate Taiwanese culture.” The organization describes itself as working to build “an integrated community where people can feel comfortable socializing and meeting new people among its hundreds of members.”
Role in the Community
Community-press coverage names NYU TASS directly across the 2011–2013 wave of Taiwanese student organizing in New York. The society hosted general meetings reported in the movement press (NYU’s TASS Hosts First General Meeting; duplicate press-record variant -2, 2012-09-27; NYU TASS Second General Meeting, 2012-02-02 — NOTE: a first-general-meeting report is dated 2012-09-27 while a second-meeting report is dated 2012-02-02; HOLD: conflict in meeting chronology, never auto-merge), and co-hosted cultural events with the wider NYC Taiwanese student circle: Night Market in NYC hosted by NYU’s TASS (2012-04-19), TASS Night Market at NYU (2013-04-11), and Taste of Taiwan with TASS at NYU (2013-11-21). Adjacent 2011 events are reported under “NYU’s TSA” branding (Halloween party sponsored by NYU’s TSA, 2011-10-28; College students party with NYU’s TASS at Pink Bash II, 2011-10-15) — HOLD: TSA vs TASS naming may be a precursor/renamed club, not auto-merged. Broader tri-state context: 北澤西同鄉會’s 2016-04-16 留美台灣青年就業座談會 (Jersey City) records “紐約大學(NYU)的學生志工們” assisting the event alongside NJIT/Stevens Taiwanese student clubs ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys219|Our Journeys #219]]) — evidence of NYU Taiwanese student involvement in the tri-state community network, but TASS is not named, so no facts are attributed to it. Note also: corpus “TASS” matches (TASS-EB 北加州東灣台美人長樂會) are a different, Bay-Area retiree organization — never merge.

Two fresh NYU hits checked and rejected: Our Journeys #283 names Washington Square/NYU Robert Student Center only as the venue of a 1970s 台美人年會 (pre-dates TASS’s 2002 founding — venue fact, not org fact), and Our Journeys #256 mentions 紐約大學醫學院 only as a neurologist’s alma mater ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys283|#283]], [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys256|#256]]).
- Corpus re-grep 2026-09-21 (slice 09210317-4): SKIP — no corpus hit names TASS. New NYU matches are unrelated: NYU Langone-Brooklyn as a mask-donation recipient (Our Journeys #360 context), Ang Lee as an NYU alum (TA.org film essay), and Audrey Tseng (NYU undergrad active in TANG/FAPA-YPG, not TASS) in Keep Taiwan Free / Reflections on 228 — no facts attributable to this org.
