溫隆信出身農家，學藥劑的爸爸平常會拉小提琴自娛，溫隆信 7 歲開始學習小提琴，但父親卻認為靠音樂吃飯以後會過窮日子，因此反對他學音樂;13 歲開始學畫，15歲在母親的支持下，追隨楊蔭芳學音樂。1964 年考進國立藝專音樂科(今國立臺灣藝術大學音樂系)，主修小提琴，並開始學習作曲，是同儕公認的狂熱創作者。1968 年，當作曲家陳懋良為了響應現代音樂發展而發起「向日葵樂會」時，理所當然地將他納為成員。他在此時期曾發表了《室內詩》(為七件樂器的複協奏曲，1968)、三首室內詩《酢醬草》、《夕》、《夜的枯萎》(1968)、《為小提琴與鋼琴的奏鳴曲》(1971) 等。
