Role in the Community

(Taiwan student association) as founded in 1996 “為了宣揚台灣意識而成立” — by 1997 it had a first president (謝良瑜) and partnered with the late 陳清風教授 (no page yet) to found the UW-M 台灣布袋戲團, whose debut was 虎姑婆 at the Milwaukee Moon Festival in 1997; the troupe ran 20+ years via “卡拉OK布袋戲” (pre-recorded narration) as turnover cycled through members.
  • Note (not merged): the memoir’s named founding president 謝良瑜 and ~1996 founding predate/precede the WIN-directory registration evidence; both kept side by side. Related local body: Taiwanese Association of Madison, WI.
  • An earlier UW-M 台灣同學會 lineage is recorded in 劉兆民’s memoir [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys205|Our Journeys #205 (劉兆民)]]: 周烒明 physician organized the 台灣同學會 on the UW campus — described as the first Taiwanese student association founded in the U.S. — and the Kuomintang government retaliated by revoking his ROC passport, rendering him stateless in America. HOLD: this earlier (1960s–70s era) 台灣同學會 vs the memoir #277’s 1996 founding — the page does not merge the two lineages.
  • The earlier lineage’s dated charter comes from 周烒明’s own draft memoir [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys81|Our Journeys #81(周烒明起稿 2014-12)]]: early 1963 an application was filed as 「UW Formosan Student Club 威大台灣同學會」, blocked by KMT-affiliated students on grounds that a Chinese student club already existed; Taiwanese students won the resulting open debate in the Student Senate (arguing for the name “Formosa” in English via 利騰俊), and the club completed its constitution on 1963-10-02 (dues US$1/semester, faculty advisors required — 周烒明 served) and registered officially at the student center as 「The Formosan Club of the University of Wisconsin 威大台灣同鄉會」 on 1963-10-19 — the only dated institutional founding evidence for this lineage.
  • Per the same memoir (citing 鄭麗伶, 自由時報 2015-11-13): UW-M’s pre-existing 中國同學會 merged with the UW 台灣同學會 in 2006, taking the present name 「台灣同學會」 — the only dated institutional change in the corpus.
  • Corpus re-check 2026-09-22: further UW-Madison hits in the memoir corpus were checked and found not to concern this association — a literary memoir campus visit ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys70|#70]]), blacklist records of individual alumni 高成炎/陳麗貞 ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys106|#106]]), the separately-founded UW-M 台灣冰壺俱樂部「戰鬥番薯」 ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys242|#242]]), and general Madison campus history ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys81-eng|#81-eng]]). No unabsorbed association detail remains.

Verified-saturated; SKIP-deepen.

  • TAA founding-chapter record: the 1970s-era UW-M chapter 「Madison」 entered the Taiwanese Association of America as one of its 28 founding chapters, with 黃利源 (Li-yuan Huang) named as the chapter’s president at founding (TAA founding-chapters record); same memoir notes May Flower was also published in Madison, Wisconsin from 1971-07-01. HOLD: founding-chapter president 黃利源 (early 1970s) vs memoir #277’s 1996-era president 謝良瑜 — distinct eras of the same student-body lineage, not merged.

Corpus re-check 2026-09-25 (deepen-x slice 09250800-1): fresh grep surfaced one new institutional fact (TAA founding chapter Madison, president 黃利源; Madison May Flower edition 1971/7/1 — absorbed above); remaining hits (ourjourneys76-eng, ourjourneys81-eng, #70, #106, #242, belonging-immigration-hsin-i-cheng, taiwanese-arts-week-madison-wi) do not concern this association.
